2019 is turning out to be a nightmare that never ends for the agriculture industry. Thanks to endless rain and unprecedented flooding, fields all over the middle part of the country are absolutely soaked right now, and this has prevented many farmers from getting their crops in the ground.
I knew that this was a problem, but when I heard that only 30 percent of U.S. corn fields had been planted as of Sunday, I had a really hard time believing it. But it turns out that number is 100 percent accurate. And at this point corn farmers are up against a wall because crop insurance final planting dates have either already passed or are coming up very quickly.
In addition, for every day after May 15th that corn is not in the ground, farmers lose approximately 2 percent of their yield. Unfortunately, more rain is on the way, and it looks like thousands of corn farmers will not be able to plant corn at all this year. It is no exaggeration to say that what we are facing is a true national catastrophe.
According to the Department of Agriculture, over the past five years an average of 66 percent of all corn fields were already planted by now…
hopefully death of the farce that is ethanol.

This should be a boon to those
farmers in more arid areas where
irrigation is required to raise
crops. Arid areas of states like
New Mexico grow many different
types of crops including corn.
Late-season plantings of a cover crop in wet ground might include cool-season species such as barley, cereal rye, winter peas, crimson clover, and brassica crops like oilseed radishes, rapeseed, and turnips. Although, seeding requires
aerial application.
All is not lost to the farmer with
soggy fields.

FWIW, here at the GA/NC border nearly every hayfield has now been cut and baled. At least a good 3 weeks earlier than usual. If it goes well, there may well be three or more cuttings this year! Of course now the summer heat has set in early and without some decent rain I could well be FOS by summer’s end... Mighty glad I ain’t in the farming biz.
If we don’t rest our fields every 7 years and rotate our crops God will help us to do so.

Seems like if the average is 66%, then 30% is almost 50%....also saw story where many are opting to not even try and just take the insurance...if the insurance didn’t require a total loss to go into effect (saw oranges rotting on the trees in Fresno area once because if they took insurance, they weren’t allowed to harvest any of the fruit even if a lot of it was viable for market), it would be profitable for them to plant/reap what they could and take insurance for the difference plus maybe a few percent as a reward for not tapping insurance for the whole deal.
The report of corn plantings at just 30% is almost two weeks old now. The latest report, issued last Monday (5/20), put corn plantings at 49% complete as of May 19. The next report coming Tuesday, will probably show much less weekly progress due to last week’s rains. Maybe 60%-65% done. Still, this would be the slowest on record.
Corn has no technology to grow quicker or in cooler climate.

Keep in mind this agricultural slowdown is due only to a “normal” weather pattern that simply isn’t being polite.
Factor in something bigger, like a solar slowdown or an atmosphere tainted by volcanic ash, and you can see how bad weather can quickly turn to famine. Preppers aren’t crazy, for the most part.
