Pope Francis said Saturday that abortion can never be condoned, even when the fetus is gravely sick or likely to die, and urged doctors and priests to support families to carry such pregnancies to term.
Speaking to a Vatican-sponsored anti-abortion conference, Francis said the opposition to abortion isnt a religious issue but a human one.
Is it licit to throw away a life to resolve a problem? he asked. Is it licit to hire a hitman to resolve a problem? [ ]
His comments come as the abortion debate is again making headlines in the U.S. with state initiatives seeking to restrict the procedure.

He’s only “rigid” when it doesn’t matter. When it matters he has “discernment”.
A change of heart? This seems very different than words and actions since becoming pope. Suspect there is error in translation, like he claims in past.
A little late to the game, don’t ya think?
When 99% of everything that falls out of his mouth is blasphemy, why would the people believe him on this?
I font like him but why does it “not matter”?
You are all so ####ing terrified that every Catholic will listen to every word he says and obey (or it really doesnt matter at all what he says) but this time they wont listen?
And do you guys need a Pope to tell you what’s right and wrong anyway?
The Bible is good for that.
It’s the “stopped clock” syndrome. But, in fairness, I welcome the Pope to the Thanksgiving Day parade, even if it is now May.
Popie Frankie’s handlers thought he could restore some credibility by allegedly taking a stand AGAINST something.
Muslims good, let them use the Vatican for their praise to allah, LGBTFreaks BETTER, but the Catholic Church is allegedly against abortion, so it doesn’t cost anything for popie to repeat that — until his position “evolves” like the Fraud’s did.
Exactly.
You know better than that.
‘m sorry. Did I see Pelosi at communion last Sunday?
When you’re right, you’re right.
Whenever you vote Democrat you’re basically hiring a hit man.
“Whenever you vote Democrat youre basically hiring a hit man.”
Nicely done.
Mother Teresa's declaration may be the most powerful statement from which to begin discussions of this subject. The Pope's comments come in far behind hers in the order of clarity.
The sole reason these rights were deemed unalienable is that both are derived from the Creator--not from the mother or father, and not from government or judicial decision. What is "granted" by human decision also can, by implication, be withheld.
"The God who gave us life, gave us liberty at the same time: the hand of force may destroy, but cannot disjoin them (life and liberty)," said Thomas Jefferson.
"The world is different now. . . and yet the same revolutionary beliefs for which our forefathers fought are still at issue around the globe--the belief that the rights of man come not from the generosity of the state but from the hand of God." - John F. Kennedy, Inaugural Address
That understanding underlies every other consideration embodied in our Declaration of Independence and every protection of our Constitution. It is the very basis of our rights to life and liberty, of laws to protect them, and it distinguishes ours from other forms of government.
When we fail to acknowledge that foundation of our liberty, then we risk liberty itself for future generations, for where does the right to choose who lives and who does not really end?
That is why the question is of vital importance in each election. Already, we have deprived millions of their Creator-endowed rights to life and liberty, and our nation must be weaker for their loss. We need leaders who understand the implications and potential consequences of departing from our founding principles.
In recent decades, technological advances have enabled us to observe the characteristics and actions of God's tiniest creations in the womb. Unlike previous generations who could not see, we have no excuse for imagining that these are mere blobs of tissue labeled "fetuses." In their early weeks, we now can see that they are living babies who will continue on to possess life and liberty if we do not "destroy" both. Indeed, they are simply smaller versions of ourselves.
Questions on the economy, taxes, threats from terrorists, health care--all are considerations at this election time. One, however, is basic to all others for me. Who will best protect the underlying premise of our Constitution--and the lives and liberties of millions yet unborn?
Promises are illusive and cheap. In 2020, this voter will examine each candidate's previous voting record carefully on all issues, because past actions are the best predictors of future decisions.
This is the only thing this “man” has said, that I know of, that is TRUE.
Mother Teresa predicted our future...uh, present times.
Yes and, WOW, I agree with this Pope for once.
More like he agrees with us, but a little too conveniently.
Like I said earlier, where was he with his “hit man” rhetoric when Ireland was voting to legalize this murderous practice? No sign of him whatsoever, and what with Ireland being majority Catholic, he should have been on the scene and the first there.
I could not agree with you more, but to answer your question on “where was he”, he was preaching global warming and one world government crap.
