FULL TITLE: Country House sensationally wins the Kentucky Derby after first-place finisher Maximum Security is DISQUALIFIED following steward's inquiry for impeding other riders
Country House has won the 2019 Kentucky Derby.
The long-shot horse, with odds of 65-1, was declared the winner of the world-famous $3 million race on Saturday, after Maximum Security was sensationally disqualified in a stewards' call.
Maximum Security crossed the line first, but its championship title was revoked after judges ruled that the thoroughbred had impeded other riders by changing lanes at the final turn.
The 150,000 spectators who descended on Churchill Downs in Louisville to watch the world-famous race were forced to wait for more than 20 minutes for a victor to be declared.
Shortly after 7 pm, Country House was crowned the winner after officials disqualified Maximum Security for the foul.
The shock decision marks the first time in the race's 145 year history that the victor has been changed on the day.

I believe a bet on Maximum Security will be treated as a push; money bet returned to bettor.
Was so glad the correct decision was made (I was not pulling for any particular horse). Let’s keep integrity going as much as we can in this country!
You would have a different opinion if the offending horse was named Clinton. :)
We were at Santa Anita racetrack for this and I couldnt figure it out, what happened. Only rewatching it at home on TV did it make even a tiny bit of sense. I felt terrible for #7s jockey and how happy he was, and the owners. What a shocker.
I thought like you too, until I read online, what if #7, whose legs did hit #1s legs, had caused a fall? Injuries? The rest of the pack? What would happen to the sport of horse racing if the Derby had caused injuries?
I dont know. Its hard to take in, though.
What a shocker. Has this ever happened before?
I agree with your assessment. I had big money on #8 Tacitus and #1 War of Will. It just wasn’t my day.
$132.40-—A bad beat for me-—I didn’t invest much but I put Country House 3rd or fourth in superfectas. I liked two longshots, Cutting Humor and Country House...stupidly I put my $5 win bet on Cutting Humor, whose odds were 24-1, little more than ONE THIRD of CH’s odds. When the DQ came and put CH on top, him winning keyed some of the biggest payoffs ever, exacta, triple, superfecta, AND Superhighfive, which, for $1 paid an astonishing $551,000.00! Fact is, Max Security was all over the place, interfered with the paths of a number of horses, especially Will to Win, causing him to nearly clip heels, and when that happens it can be fatal, producing downed horses and jockeys, screwing up the entire race. Luis Saez knew his horse was out of control, admitting he got spooked by hearing the crowd’s roar as they headed around the final turn. He said “He got scared....he’s a baby”-—It really wasn’t the jockey’s fault, though he did go nuts after he crossed the finish line, standing up, fist punching the air.
Add $2-—in pari-mutuel wagering you get the $2 added back onto it.
So it was $132.40 for every $2 wagered/
Well you know about all this and I have no clue.
Don’t know why that feels like my masculinity took a hit! :)
I’m so backwards thinking :)
Thank you.You are exactly right. Max Security screwed up a number of horses, especially #1-—who he nearly caused to clip heels with him, when he veered into his path. But W to W finished pretty far back finally. I have to check the full charts on Equibase. I have a hunch, Max Security was placed LAST.
You are right about Will to Win, and I am going to check Equibase Full Charts to see where he finished. He nearly clipped heels with the out of control Max Security, and who really knows if he woulda won, or finished better than he did. However, I can’t see the stewards granting him the win, esp. over Country House. It was a really bad beat for me, because I loved two longshots, Cutting Humor and Country House, and I chose like an idiot to put the win bet on Cutting Humor.

Churchill downs is the horse race of all horse races. First leg of the Triple Crown Plus what happened today? I don’t remember this sort of thing ever happening.
Maximum Security moved out away from along the rail, the first lane as they called it, to the fourth lane causing War of Will to almost stumble which would have been a disaster, probably causing at least 4-5 horses to go down. Then just to make the most of his run he dropped back down to the first lane along the rail cutting off Tacitus who was coming up on the inside. I was surprised the Stewards made the call in a race like the Derby, but it was definitely the right call. Country House was just the beneficiary, and the jockey on War of Will should get recognition for keeping his horse upright after being bumped three times.

Thanks for your post. It tells it like it is, but it’s going against the feelings of most FReepers on this thread who think the rules shouldn’t apply.
“The best and fastest horse did not win. Waiting for the Belmont Stakes for redemption.”
I 100% agree
132.40——
“Well you know about all this and I have no clue.”
I love the Kentucky Derby and the Iditarod. At least this article has FReepers talking about something else besides what stupid things the democrats and libs did this time. yes it’s fun but sometimes you need a change of scenery.
Could be-—I don’t see him listed as finishing LAST even, as some DQ’d horses are. That’s a helluva lotta money to give back.
