A 20-year-old college student from South Dakota fell to her death off Hawksbill Crag, a popular tourist spot in Arkansas, while posing for a photo.

Andrea Norton, of Hot Springs, S.D., was visiting the area on a school-related trip, Newton County Sheriff Glenn Wheeler told the Springfield News-Leader on Saturday.

“She was here with a group from her college, and the professor that led the group has been coming here for more than 20 years and bringing groups here,” Wheeler told NBC affiliate KY3.

Norton was hiking with classmates from Sioux City, Iowa, when she slipped and fell off the 100-foot drop while positioning herself for a photo, Wheeler told the Associated Press.

It took 61 responders several hours to get to her, he said.

“259 people died between 2011 and 2017 while stepping in front of the camera in often dangerous destinations.”

Just wow.

They could rename it “Darwin Overlook”.

And post a sign in big letters.

How sad. Getting killed to get a photo is such a waste of a life. (Although I realize war correspondents do this they know the risks - this was just carelessness)

You couldn’t even get me to the base of that thing much less climb it!

And I'd be standing 10 ft. behind you...

The mind is a strange and wonderful thing.

You walk down the sidewalk all the time and think nothing of it.

But what if there were a 1,000 foot drop on each side. Would you still walk on that very same width sidewalk?

HE!! NO!

Norton was hiking with classmates from Sioux City, Iowa,

That's quite a hike! I bet she was exhausted.

How about people just take responsibility for themselves.

My generation did that between the ages of 13 to 18.

After seeing 500 miles of corn, a rock is a beautiful thing to behold.

Is any photograph worth your life?

For me...a photo of the Lord Jesus appearing before me as he beckons to me to follow Him to Heaven would be worth it.

It was a Briar Cliff University (small Roman Catholic college in Sioux City, Iowa) sponsored trip for Environmental Science students. Environmentalism kills.

A bachelors in Environmental Science IMO a complete waste of time & money. From what I have seen at the bachelor’s level you don’t get enough basic science, math & statistics to even be a adequate technician. There’s only enough course work on paper from those other disciplines to capture federal grant money so a new department can be set up with a chairmanship & and other “perks”. (Not big perks! - Academia a place where the internal political battles are incredibly fierce and the rewards for doing so incredibly small!)

I get nervous just looking at a picture of the overhang, never mind standing on.

“This is just sad - and, are people now so unaware that all beautiful attractions will have to be fenced off?”

Beautiful waterfalls in my area are now closed off and under threat of fines/jail.

All because social media idiots would jump off and crack their skulls every few days.

I say post a warning and let em die but the lawyers probably wouldn’t have it...

I have no sympathy for the folks that do this sort of thing. Those who commit suicide by selfie are the least of them.

Just Photoshop yourself into the picture, nobody will know the difference.
