Otzi the Iceman's tools tell a story of desperation
Nature ^ | June 20, 2018 | PLoS ONE

Broken arrows and worn stone gear speak to the plight of the ancient alpine hunter.

Before his violent death 5,300 years ago, the man known as Ötzi the Iceman was carrying all the essentials, from bark storage containers to an axe. Now, an analysis suggests that many of his stone tools were old and worn, hinting at the travails of the iceman's final hours.

Ursula Wierer at the provincial Department of Archaeology, Fine Arts and Landscape in Florence, Italy, and her colleagues examined artefacts found in the Alps near Ötzi's mummified remains. His stone knife was well worn and his stone arrowheads were broken, and he lacked blanks to make new ones.

Earlier examination of Ötzi's remains revealed a deep, recent stab wound to his right hand. That might have left him unable to care for his kit -- marks on the Iceman's tools suggest that he was right-handed, the authors say.

Oh for goodness sake- could be he was just lazy and didn’t want to put the effort into making newer sharper instruments

I’ve always thought ‘Outzi’ was a criminal.

He was shot in the back with and arrow, and had a stab wound on his hand.

Had he been set upon by criminal, they would have pursued him to get whatever he had that they wanted.

If he had been wounded in the act of trying to pilfer crop or livestock by a homeowner or villager they would have merely shot at him with arrows until he was gone, without pursuit........

They may be of someone elses manufacture. Read about his kit in Traditional Bowhunter years ago. I was amazed that they were using footed arrows that long ago.

Yes, or maybe he was a retard.

That's always a factor to be considered.

He might have gotten them from his version of Harbor Freight.

After a couple of uses, went dull.

Well, he was crossing a border with insufficient means to provide for his own welfare, impoverished, poorly dressed, ill-equipped,

with all the ear-marks of a common criminal,

and the government has treated him like a hero and spent millions on him ever since.

I don’t know who he was but I’m pretty sure he’s dead,

And I sure know how he’s expected to vote!

Or, maybe he was nearing the end of a long journey and had used up what he started out with.

It’s often very easy to tell when it’s wakademics who’ve never actually had to get get out and actually live life outside the ivory tower complexes.

Nope, thanks, will check it out. Lots of possibilities using Otzi and his time for the staging -- perhaps he had been the chieftain, and was overthrown, driven out, and then hunted down by his tribe. Maybe he was a serial jackass and found himself among a group that wouldn't put up with his BS. Maybe he was considered a poacher by some locals who killed him. Perhaps he was just murdered by a gang of stone age highwaymen.

He may have been a survivor of a defeated prehistoric 'army' who fled and never managed to find any of his fellows.
