What we aren't eating is killing us, global study finds

Which risk factor is responsible for more deaths around the world than any other? Not smoking. Not even high blood pressure. It's a poor diet.

"In many countries, poor diet now causes more deaths than tobacco smoking and high blood pressure," said Ashkan Afshin, an assistant professor at the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation at the University of Washington.

And it's not just that people are choosing unhealthy options such as red meat and sugary sodas. Just as critical, said Afshin, the lead author of a 27-year global diet analysis published Wednesday in the journal the Lancet, is the lack of healthy foods in our diets, along with high levels of salt.

"While traditionally all the conversation about healthy diet has been focused on lowering the intake of unhealthy food, in this study, we have shown that, at the population level, a low intake of healthy foods is the more important factor, rather than the high intake of unhealthy foods," he said.

One in five deaths globally -- that's about 11 million people -- in 2017 occurred because of too much sodium and a lack of whole grains, fruit and nuts and seeds, the study found, rather than from diets packed with trans fats, sugar-sweetened drinks and high levels of red and processed meats.

No point in putting crap fuel in a vehicle if you expect it to perform well and last a long time.

And once the socialists get a permanent hold of your healthcare, they’ll make you eat what they want you to eat, and they’ll make you stop eating what they want you to stop eating.

Excellent advice eyeamok.
You explained it in a way that should save thousands of people hours of research for the small investment of time reading your post.

I find it interesting that there is such confusion about the subject, but then I see ads promoting weight loss products for better health. The ‘you get what you pay for’ rule applies but what you get is not what you expect!

> Failure to eat whole food is a major contributor.

I agree, so this morning I ate a whole package of bacon. I guess tonight I’ll have to drink a whole 6 pack of beer. /g

Horrible. Red meat is great for you. Read THE BIG FAT SURPRISE
Why Butter, Meat & Cheese Belong in a Healthy Diet. Its clear that climate and PETA people are trying to link red meat to bad health. But the fact is, red meat is better than all the kale in Kansas. Americans do not have the healthiest people. They should not be telling the world what to eat.

>>Salt has ALWAYS been part of a healthy diet...EVERYWHERE and at ALL TIMES!

Do you have any idea how little salt you have to eat in order to stay healthy? If you do, then you probably are not part of the problem - if you have no idea, then the article is about you.

There is a big difference between educating people about what is healthy and what is not, and forcing them to eat it.

Information is good. Ignorance is not.

Correlational is not causation. If you’re diabetic or trying to lose weight you’re probably more likely to be drinking diet soda (rather than regular).

Check out the generic medications as well as OTC’s coming out of third-world countries and what’s really in them if you want to find out what’s also killing people. Find out how many FDA inspectors there are in these countries ensuring what’s in the medications.

I don't know one person who has died that didn't drink milk some time in their life..........Coincidence?

As for water, I'm not sure about that either. Seems to me that everyone dying today has been drinking water........Coincidence?

The only advice I can offer is party like it's 1999.......

Smoke em if ya got em, and save a bottle for me.

Do you know how little of the problem is caused by diet, as opposed to how much of the problem is caused by insufficient exercise compared to past generations?

If you don't, then not only are you part off the health problem, you are also part of the growth of socialism and the chances are one hundred percent that you would promote communist diatribes written for the purpose of conditioning the public to accept Government mandate controlling what food people are allowed to eat.

Whole grains are not healthy.

But they keep pushing that because they want to demonize meat.

Quite true. I’ve been on a low carb diet (10-20 grams a day) for about a year now and have lost about 45 pounds.
