On a barren hillside in northern Albania lies a portal to the country's communist past: a massive steel door creaks open to reveal a hidden former air base burrowed into the heart of the mountain. Made up of 600 metres (1,980 feet) of tunnels that once teemed with military life, the secret Gjader air base is now a depot for dozens of hulking communist-era MiG jets collecting dust in the darkness.
Three decades after shedding communism, Albanian authorities are still trying to sell off the Soviet and Chinese-made aircraft, of which there are dozens more in another nearby air base.

Bargain! It's not the original cost... it's the upkeep.

Somehow I don’t think the parts needed to keep it running are readily available.

When Albania first discussed selling the MiGs in 2016, requests came in from the Air and Space Museum in France, as well as a flight school in Germany. LOL!.....Nobody wants these things!.................

If they're MiG-15's and MiG-17's, there is a LOT of demand for those planes from pilots wanting to fly them at air shows. The MiG-17 is actually a very pleasant plane to fly, mostly because the MiG bureau corrected the nasty high-speed instability issue that plagued the MiG-15.

Tell me about it!
A Cessna 172 costs me $150 an hour to fly.
Restoration will be a million. Hourly will be close to middle four figures. Probably more.

Shipping kind of pricey.
I love to have one sitting at my warehouse facility with all the other stuff that doesn’t work.

If the Germans were smart they would buy and scrap all those jets. Would not put it past the crazy Islamists to buy some, train a few pilots and send them on a final one way mission.

Actually the old Mig-21s used by India, and upgraded with modern electronics by Israel, work pretty well.

The MiG-17 is actually a very pleasant plane to fly, mostly because the MiG bureau corrected the nasty high-speed instability issue that plagued the MiG-15. Grumman test pilot Don Evans said that the F-86 was able to dominate the MiG-15 only at high Q. You couldnt tangle with them at high altitudes, and you had to keep your speed up at lower altitudes. Otherwise the MiG had better performance. But since the F-86 had power assisted flight controls, it could be maneuvered at high Equivalent Air Speed, while the control force needed to maneuver a MiG15 was beyond human capability.
