Grumman test pilot Don Evans said that the F-86 was able to dominate the MiG-15 only at high Q. You couldnt tangle with them at high altitudes, and you had to keep your speed up at lower altitudes. Otherwise the MiG had better performance. But since the F-86 had power assisted flight controls, it could be maneuvered at high Equivalent Air Speed, while the control force needed to maneuver a MiG15 was beyond human capability.

MiG-15 pilots actually tried to out-dive the F-86 in combat over Korea. Unfortunately, several were killed because the MiG-15 became unstable above circa Mach 0.87. A redesigned wing and a somewhat longer fuselage made the MiG-17 a lot more stable at transonic speeds.
