Most houses with crawl spaces have entry points to get in for maintenance of stuff like plumbing and HVAC. And vents for allowing air circulation. As houses get old, these are often compromised and critters are attracted to the warmth in winter.

Seymour,TX, and Waurika, Oklahoma, both within an hours’ drive of there have rattlesnake hunts to decrease the numbers of the critters. Some of those places have so many rattlesnakes that just hiking through the pastures is a dangerous task.
