The mayor of Bologna is on a passionate crusade against spaghetti bolognese, condemning it as 'fake news'.
Despite it being famous the world over, Virginio Merola wants his northern Italian city to wash its hands of the dish.
He said it 'doesn't exist' and went as far as to call the pasta dish 'fake news'.

I didn’t get the Eric Idle reference but I love him. Right up to where he gets stupid about American politics like everyone else in Hollywood. But I still love the way he thinks. Can’t believe how old he is.

Some years back, I was part of a small cycling group, and one of the group was from the Netherlands.
One ride we broke for lunch at a diner. As he was looking at the menu, he suddenly exclaimed, “Look! “Dutch Apple Pie”! In Holland, we have no such thing!”
Hey, Mayor Virgie? Bite me. It brings happy people to your town and puts money in the pockets of your merchants and your municipality. Shut the hell up and be happy. Oh, and bring me a plate of spaghetti!
Never even heard of this dish. I had to look it up. I now realize I’ve been making something similar to it for the last several years - just throwing together a meat sauce when I don’t have time to make meatballs.

Italians understand pasta dishes the way Einstein understood physics. It’s their special genius.
All you need is some good meat and you’re set
And yeah, what you make is pretty much bolognese :)
Bologna is an amazing food capital of Italy.
I spent a day shopping, learning how it all works and what is available, sampling things and cooking.
When I saw my first market, I couldn’t believe what was available.
