Romaine lettuce is unsafe to eat in any form, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said Tuesday in a broad alert in response to a new outbreak of illnesses caused by a particularly dangerous type of E. coli contamination.
The CDC told consumers to throw away any romaine lettuce they may already have purchased. Restaurants should not serve it, stores should not sell it, and people should not buy it, no matter where or when the lettuce was grown. It doesnt matter if it is chopped, whole head or part of a mix. All romaine should be avoided.

Hey, I finished a head of Romaine yesterday, and I feel just— AAAARRRRGGGHHH. . . .
I nearly lost Mr. RightField to an ecoli infection in 2012. He had a strain that attacked the kidneys. I spent 48 wondering if I was going to be a widow. The doctors told me they had to ‘culture’ his strain which would take 48 hours. During that time he was on cipro. Now I wonder if that regimen contributed to his kidney failure. At almost exactly 48 hours after he entered the ER, a nurse came in with a specific treatment for his strain and he started to recover within 2 hours of getting that medicine. But, he’s been at 30% kidney function ever since. Scary stuff.
If you're a person that wants to spread the greatest amount of e-coli you would shit in the water they spray on the lettuce as they're being harvested.
Seriously? If so you should check it out.
Wow...scary indeed. That must have been horrifying for you. Glad he’s better, but what a shame losing so much kidney function.
This is true of course but you know lately Ive been getting the filthiest vegetables Ive ever seen. Its almost like there was some kind of regulation change and nobody is bothering to wash anything. We don’t eat romaine except what we may occasionally grow but the celery has been terrible. I bought some turnip greens and mustard greens that had enough sand to fill a small childs sandbox, there was a bunch of spinach that had big clumps of mud woven up amongst the leaves, a pack of mushrooms that had mushrooms on the top and the rest of the tub was substrate, and the only green onions available recently were half mud clumps from Ohio.
Licking your monitor has more nutrition than iceberg.
I can say that at least one fast food chain (and probably more) has issued a national internal alert to all it’s stores to destroy ALL romaine and baby green mix (also called spring mix) and any salads made with them currently on hand. They’ve told them that if they can’t get supplies of alternate lettuce (green leaf and iceberg), it’s okay to not serve salads.
A little exposure to e coli and other pathogens strengthens the immune system.
Just sayin’
Gees! Should I throw my lettuce away???!!!!!!!!!
(That is just a joke)
Ok..so order the small salad and get back to us ;)
Not really. It’s a bacterium, not a virus.
Doesn't matter where it's grown? WTH is the ComPost talking about? Is there some conservative romaine tycoon they're trying to bring down? Or are they planning to ship all the perfectly sound uneaten romaine to the Invasion of Illegals?
Gamma sterilization of food products has been tested as effective to kill pathogens. Sixty year old process.
Could be illegals poisoning the Americans that Americans are too lazy to poison... or some such liberal excuse for why we need illegals here...
The wife prefers romaine to other lettuce - but she also separates the leaves and washes them in a water/vinegar solution before using for salads.....surprising how much dirt comes out of what appears to be a clean (cone)head of lettuce
Thanks, gonna give that a try.
news reports say that this particular strain of e-coli is resistant to any washing...just trash it, as it can create toxins that attack the kidneys in addition to the diarrhea.
I think that makes more sense, then. I don't see how such a "natural" contamination would only be limited to Romaine, and not the other varieties which are probably grown on similar farms.
If true, this is a horrific prospect, though. Domestic biological terrorism.
