Microsoft points to a golden future where you can make Windows 10 your own (2019)

Or at least uninstall some of the bits you really don't want

Microsoft has announced that its customers will finally be able to remove more of the cruft that arrives with a Windows 10 installation. In 2019.

While Slow and Release Preview ring Windows Insiders got to experience Redmond’s latest efforts to stabilise the troubled OS, Fast ring and Skippy testers got their hands on a fresh build of the 2019 version of Windows 10 (aka 19H1).

Build 18262 has finally introduced the ability to uninstall some more of the preinstalled Windows 10 apps (also confusingly known as "inbox"), such as little-used 3D Viewer, aka Mixed Reality Viewer. The following apps can also now be uninstalled:

Users would previously need to exercise their PowerShell muscles to get the things off their system. While we at The Reg are big fans of PowerShell (and all things CLI), it seemed a little harsh to force customers to resort to the command line or Registry editor to remove unwanted apps.

It is already possible to remove the likes of Solitaire, Skype and Weather. Sadly, it doesn’t seem that Microsoft’s largesse extends to making the Edge browser uninstallable.

The update also includes better visibility into which apps are likely to throw a wobbly in a high DPI environment and introduces a "Troubleshoot" function, which makes use of diagnostic data slurped from the PC to suggest fixes for problems. It sounds suspiciously like those helpful websites that claim to spot issues on your rig and offer a fix, before spraying your OS with layer upon layer of malware. Just without the malware bit.

Significantly, the Windows Insider team cautioned that as this is early on in development, “builds may contain bugs that might be painful for some”. It seems a shame that they didn’t slap a similar warning on the release code too. ®

Windows 10 Update - Uninstall the Cruft... PING!

You can find all the Windows Ping list threads with FR search: just search on keyword "windowspinglist".

If you're smart enough to have kept one of the Windows 7 products, this is the best "patch" you can possibly install on top of your O/S:

Never 10

“Cruft.” Never heard that word before. Given the context I am inclined to treat it as a synonym for “crap.”

When they make all their inbuilt spying removable in Win 10, wake me up.

“Sadly, it doesn’t seem that Microsoft’s largesse extends to making the Edge browser uninstallable.”

Simple enough - don’t use it and install Waterfox instead as your goto browser:

“Never 10”

I run that on a regular basis on my Win 7 & 8.1 installs. MS tries to sneak in “upgrade” to Win 10 in Windows updates every now & then. So I run it, at the least, after every regular monthly update.

Funny, neither of my two Dell Win 7 PCs have ever bugged me about 10. Dunno if they have an OEM trick to disable that, or what. I did not allow updates on my older machine for over two years. Newer laptop I did, but no 10 nag notices.

I suppose they know if you went to the trouble of buying a new PC with 7, you certainly wanted nothing to do with 10.

Cruft is useless stuff, not exactly crap, but more like the lint in your pants pocket that used to be part of the pocket material, or clothes-dryer fluff. Or the random scraps of material that are left over after you whittle down a piece of wood.

Think more like "useless" than like "crap".

I've seen it spelled "kruft" also.

10 was a nightmare for me. Memory hog. Spyware pre-installed. Got slower and slower. I wiped my puter clean and installed Linux. No more MS for me.

Just shut-off the MS Update virus-installer. Eliminates the chance of your entire PC crashing and burning from one of those “patches” that MS rolls out on users to help them de-bug their bloatware.

[[When they make all their inbuilt spying removable in Win 10, wake me up.]]

And when they make updates optional NOT mandatory, wake me up too=- (allowing us complete control over which updates we want- soem updates break things, and users used to be able to wait till the updates were fixed, THEN dload the update-)

When they give us back control over how our start menu looks and functions, (ie like windows 7 or windows xp look and function) wake me up too

If they will do these three things, then yes, it will be an awesome operating system

I’m not sure I have all of those programs.

Snip & Sketch does not seem to be installed.

Other programs, like Paint 3D, are programs that I use. I just used Paint 3D tonight.

Now THAT is what I call good thinking by Dell.

Classic Shell is still working for me - until they break it. I still fight file associations and other nonsense where 10 overrides user choices. FF still the best browser overall.

“when they make updates optional NOT mandatory, wake me up too”

You can’t choose which updates you’ll take, but you can set Win 10 so that it downloads updates only when you’re ready to do them. (Set Updates to “metered connection”, if you’re not using a PC to wall connection)

“When they give us back control over how our start menu looks and functions”

I get Win 7 “back” using -
Open-Shell (Formerly Classic-Start)

Maybe they have by now. But I still wouldn’t trust them - and so I run Never10. MS wants everybody to switch to 10.
