This Thursday marks what would have been the 100th birthday of Rosemary Kennedy, the eldest daughter of Joseph P. Kennedy and his wife, Rose.

For many years, the story of JFK’s sister, who had an undiagnosed mental disability and was lobotomized at age 23, was shrouded in mystery.

A vivacious young woman with a sweet disposition, Rosemary’s life was dramatically altered when her father decided to have her undergo a pre-frontal lobotomy in November 1941, a procedure that left her with the mental capacities of a toddler and requiring round-the-clock care

Joe was pure evil. It stands to reason that he would sic the most evil profession on Earth on his daughter.

“Some actually were more successful than others, there is a movie about an actress who had it forcefully done called ‘Frances’ which is pretty horrifying, but in real life she went on to appear on TV regularly.”

I think you mean Frances Farmer, but I don’t think she ever had a lobotomy done. She had insulin shock therapy, however: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Insulin_shock_therapy

The Old Man was a beast and a sexual predator. There were rumors of incest and everything. Poor Rosemary. Her life was essentially taken away from her at age 23. Because she told.

It is a myth, an urban legend: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Frances_Farmer#Lobotomy_claims

Sorry, but I don't buy the FDR gave away Eastern Europe at Yalta argument.

Yalta was in February 1945. At that time the Red Army had overrun all of Eastern Europe and was 40 miles from Berlin. On the other hand, the Anglo-American armies were on the western border of Germany, having just restored what they lost in the Battle of the Bulge. Britain and the US were in no position to demand Stalin withdraw.

Stalin agreed to guarantee the independence of Eastern Europe and to give Britain and the US zones of occupation in areas it was not clear we would conquer before the end of the war. That was the most we could achieve given the cards dealt.

Now, I agree FDR was a dyed in the wool liberal and a squish on communism. His administration was shot through with Soviet spies. But he didn't give away Eastern Europe because it was not ours to give.

Stalin agreed to guarantee the independence of Eastern Europe

And FDR bought that fairy tale hook/line/sinker, at least partially attributable to Hopkins playing Franklin's Rasputin.

And probably a lesbian. And a big supporter of, and involved in the forming of the UN.

Or perhaps she “saw something” that Joe wanted to make sure she never repeated.

He was even more evil than I already knew.

You are embarassing me. Have a prefrontal lobotomy.

Is it possible that she could have been attracted to women, and Joe couldn’t handle that, and had her brains scrambled?
He never could allow anything like that to be associated with the family.

Is it possible that she could have been attracted to women, ...

Well, the specific story I remember is when Adolph's pals, Joe & Co. were at the Court of St. James, Rosemary was having a fling with a chauffeur/driver, that was what set off finding a "solution" to Rosemary.

Beyond that, I haven't the slightest clue.

“Poor child. She really did not look like the other Kennedys. Soft features and an open smile.”

Beautifully put. Rosemary did not deserve the fate inflicted upon her by her horrid parents.

woman were considered nymphomaniacs if they had the appetites of men. Another diagnosis was hysteria or sexual addition.

“lobotomy in November 1941...”

1941? Suspicious. Maybe I’m wrong, but I thought lobotomies were performed for a few years in 1960 until the Portuguese inventor decided it was bad and told everyone to stop.

The use of the procedure increased dramatically from the early 1940s and into the 1950s; by 1951, almost 20,000 lobotomies had been performed in the United States alone and proportionally more in the United Kingdom.[5] The majority of lobotomies were performed on women; A 1951 study of American hospitals found nearly 60% of lobotomy patients were women; data shows 74% of lobotomies in Ontario from 1948–1952 were performed on women.[6][7][8] From the 1950s onward lobotomy began to be abandoned[9], first in the Soviet Union and Europe.[citation needed] The term is derived from Greek: λοβός lobos "lobe" and τομή tomē "cut, slice".
