Slant six, the engine that couldn’t be killed.

Slant Six, for sure always jumped to life to, like it knew you were going to start it!

Two of the best ever vehicles ever made had inline sixes.
The 4.0 liter Jeep Cherokee and the 4.9 liter Ford F-150.
Bulletproof engines. They will last a million miles.

When did it disappear? I had a straight 6 in my ‘03 Trailblazer. Dang fine engine, that.

BMW still offers them in the six-banger models. There is *something* about an inline six.

Jaguar was considering going back to an in-line 6. Not sure if that’s still the plan.

The V6 took dominance over the I6 because of front wheel drive and transverse engine placement. Once you started building V6s for front drive cars, it didn't make economic sense to continue to build I6s for the ever shrinking number of rear wheel drive models. (Exceptions being I6 diesels in pickup trucks.)
Sorry, but in spite of Mercedes niche market use, the I6 is still dead, Jim.

I bought a 1960 Valiant with a straight “Slant Six” with 50k miles for $450 when I was in college. Drove it through college and gave it to my little brother when I joined the Navy. I came back from the Navy in 1974 and the dealer called and wanted to buy the car back for $400. They wanted the engine. As far as I know, that engine is still running an irrigation pump somewhere in South Dakota.

.
But I drove a ‘55 270 Plymouth V8 several thousand miles after it threw its #8 rod!
Had it been any other rod, the damage to the camshaft would likely have doomed it.
It was still running ok (but lumpy) when I finally yanked it and replaced it with a 318 V8.

Just bought my second inline 6 in the last 10 years.IIRC the company I bought from is one of the only major companies that's been offering one in recent years.
