I drove a slant 6 100 miles AFTER it threw a rod.

I bought a 1960 Valiant with a straight “Slant Six” with 50k miles for $450 when I was in college. Drove it through college and gave it to my little brother when I joined the Navy. I came back from the Navy in 1974 and the dealer called and wanted to buy the car back for $400. They wanted the engine. As far as I know, that engine is still running an irrigation pump somewhere in South Dakota.

.
But I drove a ‘55 270 Plymouth V8 several thousand miles after it threw its #8 rod!

Had it been any other rod, the damage to the camshaft would likely have doomed it.

It was still running ok (but lumpy) when I finally yanked it and replaced it with a 318 V8.

I bought a 70 nova in high school with a straight 6. I built a 454 gmc truck engine with the tall deck. When time came to yank out the straight 6 I took bets on how long it would run with a brick on the gas pedal after draining the coolant and oil. The longest bet was maybe three minutes. It ran almost 20. It was winter time. It locked up. During the time it ran it through a rod and still ran. After the show it was going in the garage. We hit the key for giggles and it started up again.
