Democratic enthusiasm and a GOP malaise surrounding President Trump have set the stage for a potentially devastating midterm election for the House Republican majority.
In a series of special elections mostly in reliably GOP districts, Democratic candidates have routinely outperformed Hillary Clintons share of the vote from 2016.
At the same time, Republican candidates have underperformed President Trump's vote share in all but two special elections.
If that pattern holds in November, the worst-case scenario for the GOP is a truly historic wipeout of as many as 72 House seats, according to The Hills analysis of special election results and congressional and presidential returns from 2016...

Well, Reid, can you spell delusional?
Trying to write history before it happens. SOP.
I think his time would be better spent in his back yard at night with his telescope looking for that really big asteroid that will wipe us all out.
Living in the past. 2006 wants its election back.
I’m guessing that Russia will once again engineer a miraculous win for Trump’s side, causing the Left much consternation.
Insanity is doing the same thing over and over while expecting a different outcome...
Yeah, that ain’t gonna happen.
I’m not following individual races or doing any serious analysis, but I find it pretty difficult to believe there will be a 70 seat loss.
That said, if that does happen, the people of this country fully deserve the sh1tshow that will follow. Libs for voting for it, and Republicans for allowing it by not voting.
I hope the RNC is awake to this possibility and mobilizing the ground game. Like real estate and location, the key for the midterms is turn out, turn out, turn out. Come on patriots don’t fail us now. I live in commie Kalifornia and I’ll be voting the party ticket.
Romney’s wet dream.
Projecting a “wipeout” of the Republicans is a pretty shake prediction to be making in August, some two and a half months before the competition really heats up.
Things really do mot look that good for the Democrats, Bernie Sanders and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez to the contrary.
The newly-employed and off-welfare people are looking at the world a little differently, and socialism no longer hold that great of an appeal.
Neither does impeaching Donald Trump, or paying more taxes.
Response: 50 campaign visits by the election, with tens of thousands in the house or standing nearby, with millions watching at home, and tens of millions viewing photos and clips on-line.
Independents, are the ones that matter and they won’t be bored.
This rectum needs to pass a drug test before he gets ready to spew out another Fake News oped!
Reminds me-——Nate Silver’s midterm prediction is pretty close to his 71.4% odds on Hillary winning (posted the same day she lost bigly).
At least he’s consistent.......smirk.
Let’s see:
“Malaise “
“Democratic candidates have routinely outperformed Hillary Clintons share of the vote from 2016.”
And still lost
I’d ask for a hit off his pipe but, whatever’s in it makes you stupid.
Pass...
I built a lot of model airplanes in my youth but none of them actually flew.
Why would Romney want this?
Great post.
This is like a magazine cartoon of 2 studious men amidst dozens of book shelves. One says:
Those who don’t study history are doomed to repeat it. Yet those who *do* study history are doomed to stand by helplessly while everyone else repeats it.
