FULL TITLE: 'A little too late': Parents of Florida tourist, 35, who died after being punched in the face in New York, reject 'condolences' from the Wake Forest basketball coach charged in the assault
The parents of a Florida tourist who died after being punched in the face have rejected condolences from Jamill Jones, the Wake Forest assistant basketball coach charged over the fatal assault.
Bob and Donna Kent appeared on the Today show Friday and said that Jones should have tried to save their son Sandor Szabo's life after punching him early Sunday.
'If you're this good father, son, husband, why not try to take him to the hospital and see if you could save his life?' Bob said.
Jones turned himself in to police in Queens on Thursday, and his defense attorney Alain Massena later released a statement saying: 'This was a tragic accident, and Mr Jones and his family send their deepest condolences and their thoughts and prayers to the Szabo family.'
Donna responded to the statement saying: 'I'm sorry, your condolences are a little bit too late.'

Unlucky white guy tapped on the window of a car with a privileged black guy inside it. In this day in age blacks are on a hair trigger to take offense at absolutely anything and everything, and explode into violence. That’s all that happened. Walking around with chips on their shoulders. I hope he rots in prison
I hope he goes to prison, but these days, who knows?
If someone pounds fists on my car, I am likely to respond in a physical manner, and not take it quietly like a coward.
Do not underestimate the power of “diss” culture. It’s been pervasive in the black community now for at least a full generation. It’s what drives most of these violent encounters when a normal person would look at a situation and shrug it off.
The basketball coach clearly feared for his life from an aggressive white member of the patriarchy, who could have just as easily been a violent law-enforcement officer seeking to abuse and oppress the basketball coach on the pretext of some minor driving offense. After all, this respected coach sees this every day with the vulnerable, at-risk young men-of-color he mentors.
(waiting for it.....)
When that happens to me, without thinking, I naturally take it as a compliment. Don't know why.
So true. The best analysis of this event
You are a FOOL, then! look what happened....one is DEAD and the OTHER is RUINED! DRIVE AWAY! Coward....YEAH, but a LIVE coward!
Yes, spot on. A "person of color" dealing with, probably exclusively, other "young men of color" and especially working at a University where he is going to be absolutely soaked and infused in the cheap slogans and propaganda of racial oppression, combined with his heightened sportsman testosterone, is a very dangerous mix.
“And over at the NYT building, Sarah Jeong does a little happy dance.”
Well stated. For her: “One down, 199,999,999 to go”!
You may think that your post makes you look macho. It doesn't.
I vote most likely innocent and hope that folks here gather more facts before routinely becoming judge and jury with minimal facts.
From the original story:
The incident came after Szabo (the deceased who was drunk and banging on car windows)) punched a resident who came outside amid the ruckus, according to The Post, which led Jones to act.
“If someone pounds fists on my car, I am likely to respond in a physical manner, and not take it quietly like a coward.”
Agree...just because many (or maybe most) of us here would laugh it off DOES NOT mean that people outside of our world will react the same. How hard was he pounding? Did he damage the car? Did he stay there and keep pounding away? Was he told to get lost, but instead kept pounding?
We’ll probably never know most of the above, so the idea that we judge this man’s reaction based on the little we do know is a bit premature. To put it another way, there are PLENTY OF WHITE PEOPLE who would react the same as here...in fact, depending on aggressive this guy was, some of us may well have put some lead in him.
“It certainly confused me. :)”
That’s because it’s confusing! I only know the coach hit the dude and something about an uber, nothing else. Have to post this here to figure out the rest of the story.
It’s sad the man was drunk and was doing the right thing “don’t drink and drive” but still got killed. All the coach had to say was “I’m not an uber driver” and go.
“Exactly. Knocking on the window is not a capital crime. “
It is in Chicago. Hell, even fleeting eye contact can cost someone their life. You see, we’re dealing with a different culture here.
Knockout Game incognito.
"...do not underestimate the power of diss culture..."
Agreed!
Correct!
