JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - A 6-year-old girl attacked by a dog Sunday morning has died, according to her father.

Police said Jaelah Smith was attacked by a dog the family was pet sitting in their Arlington home.

In a message to News4Jax, Devin Holcomb wrote:

"Unfortunately my princess is no longer with us. I would like for you guys to keep my family in your prayers"

Police and firefighters were called to a house on Herrick Drive about 10:15 a.m. Sunday by a neighbor who heard screaming and saw the girl's mother carry the girl's unconscious body outside.

“I just kept hearing somebody (yell), 'Help me, help me!'" Timothy Hightower told News4Jax. “She came out of the house and laid the baby down right there and told us to call the paramedics, and that’s what we did.”

Jaelah was taken to Memorial Hospital with what police described as “very serious, life-threatening injuries.” She was transferred to Wolfson Children's Hospital, where she later died.

The interactive map at the National Pit Bull Victim Awareness site has 11 deaths by pit bull listed on the interactive map here:

https://www.nationalpitbullvictimawareness.org/attacks/map-of-attacks-2018/

But they are missing the 91 YO man in Ardana (sp) California last week, and the Dogo Argentino breeder’s wife fatally mauled by the man’s Dogo (”Pure White”) in CA three weeks ago. (A Dogo Argentino is a related breed)

If you count it as twelve, which comes to at least one death every 16.6 days this year so far. If you count the “Death by Dogo” - and I do - it is one death every 15.3 days.

6 YO girl...

The deranged breed must be genetically identified and culled.

A friend of mine had the sweetest, gentlest pit bull ...until it ate a chunk of her cat.

Yes.

This item below contains the link to a video article on the legal responsibility of dog owners in Florida, but cannot be excerpted or linked from FreeRepublic, as it is a Gannett source:

FLORIDA
Update: As follow up on several recent pit bull attacks (including this week’s fatality), Florida law regarding dog attacks is discussed.

“We also took a closer look at Florida’s laws to see how dog owners could be held liable if their animal attacks someone. Statutes show that owners are held liable for damages regardless of where the animal is, even if the owner’s not around. If the victim was negligent, however, they could share in that liability and criminal charges could follow as well. The owner could face a misdemeanor charge.

If a dog determined to be dangerous kills someone, that owner could be charged with a felony.

Exceptions do apply, for example, if the victim was committing a crime, like a burglar.”

I consider it worth watching, as I believe that one is responsible for one’s possessions, including animals.

These dogs are KILLING people. I no longer have any patience for staunch their defenders.

When the Lamb opened the fourth seal, I heard the voice of the fourth living creature say, “Come!”. I looked, and there before me was a pale horse! Its rider was named Death, and Hades was following close behind him. They were given power over a fourth of the earth to kill by sword, famine and plague, and by the wild beasts of the earth. Revelation 6:7-8 NIV.

Unfortunately, as far as I can see, in this message format there is no way to highlight or bold the words one wishes to spotlight.

A friend of mine acquired a pit bull puppy six months ago. The person who gave it to her told her it was a “French Bulldog” puppy. I looked it over and told her that they had lied to her. I allowed her to bring it to my house when it was 3.5 months old, to get a look at its behavior and conformation. Not good, this one was aggressive, and had been taken from its mother at 5 weeks, missing crucial socialization time. She would not get rid of it, and has an old cat. She will not listen to anything I have to say about her decision.

All I can do is wait until the inevitable. I cannot trust this friend anymore, because she now identifies with the pit bull, as do so many of their owners, and values it more than humans, and certainly more than her self-respect. She was hiding the dog from one landlord, and has lied to another to get the dog into an apartment.

This will not end well.

. . . .”and by the wild beasts of the earth.”

Perhaps they are part of the “wild beasts” mentioned. Certainly they have been described in this manner in these forums previously.

If a dog determined to be dangerous kills someone, that owner could be charged with a felony.

Everyone is entitled to their opinion of course but unless there's intent to commit a crime; there is no crime.

I personally would not keep a biting dog around. No matter how much I cared for the animal; as long as I could see it was a danger to others I would have to do the right thing and euthanize it. In fact I thought I had such a dog (not a Pit) and turned her into the pound when she bit me when I tried to pull her away from my Pit-mix while they were fighting. I later learned she was not trying to hurt me but was seeing red from being in a fight over something the two dogs disagreed about. I regret that decision to this day and will never make that same mistake again. By the way; the Pit-mix didn't bite me at all and the one that did was generally gentle but because I had it in my head I would not tolerate a biting dog I made the fatal mistake of turning her in where they they promptly killed her. My heart aches to this day over that stupid mistake. By the time I realized how stupid I had been; it was too late. They had already killed her. That guilt is mine to carry for the rest of my life.

From what I understand home insurance companies do raise their rates on folks who have certain breeds of dogs. The bully breeds to be exact. Landlords frequently won't rent to those who own those breeds as well.

If some people don't know some breeds are more prone to unexpected violent behavior by now with all the publicity they have gotten over the years; they will never get it. One place to remind people of this is at rescue shelters. If you really want to do some good on stopping the adoption of the bully breeds; that's where you do it.

I inherited a Doberman years ago. I was advised to be aware this breed can literally go insane as it gets into its senior years. Heck; some people do too. Did you hear about the 92 yo woman who shot and killed her own son because he wanted to put her in an assisted living home? By the way; I had to give the Dobie away because I too could not keep it where I moved to. She lived a nice long life until she started acting "off" then the decision was made to put her down by the people who had her at the time. Dog people generally know if their dog has a violent streak. Whether they act on that is another story which I think is your point. You want to force them to put these dogs down before they cause harm; at least that's the way I'm taking it. I can appreciate that point because who wants to see their dog cause harm to others; especially a child. The guilt would be unbearable.

If you're going to beat up one breed of dogs day after day then you should at least be fair and post the same bizarre behavior shown by people on a daily basis.

Do you think it's time to start pro-actively euthanizing these people who show signs of dementia and/or insanity with a tendency toward violence? One never knows when they will kill their own children after all. For the good of the children; right? Of course the children might be in their 60's or 70's but what about the grandchildren?

I believe there's enough evidence to eliminate the strain of Pit-Bulls in existence today even though it's a small percentage that actually cause harm. The real question is how does society go about doing this? You can't possibly demand every Pit-Bull owner kill their beloved dog so what is the answer? Forced sterilization? Free neutering a spaying for any Pit, Dobie, Rottie, Boxer, or any other bully breed? I'd really like to know the answer because pointing out the danger is noble even if redundant at this point. For what it's worth; I would not have a bully breed around small children. Heck; I'd be very concerned around big kids knowing how mean some of them can be to animals at times. Maybe we should euthanize those mean kids while we're at it.

I've read about science being able to see into our DNA to tell us who is pre-disposed to certain diseases. Maybe one day soon science will be able to do a DNA test on unborn babies so if they are pre-disposed to violence so we can cull them from the womb before they are born to do harm. If we can do this for humans maybe we can do it for puppies when they are born. A quick stick with a needle and if the test strip turns red; kill it. Sound crazy? It may be where we are heading; scientifically speaking.

Seriously though; if you really want to end the ownership of the bully breeds you're going to have to go to where people usually get them. The rescue shelters who adopt them out. Puppy mills are even worse because they tend to inbreed them.

Insane reply boomer, Comparing a dog breed to humans because humans also kill. While I agree there are blood thirsty humans, the extreme rarity of them in society does not put them on the same plane as pits and their off shoots. Infact you may have just as well said Black humans kill more per capita than white humans so we should ban blacks using the logic as those who wish to ban pits.. or maybe whites because most serial killers are white, Or white late teens early 20 somethings because most mass murderers are teen males. The most dangerous breed of human right now isn’t a breed its a mental illness called tds . Ill stop now , you have been enlightened enough to your own twisted logic. You wont be convinced until its too late and that dog has euther died or bite someone. I hope you never have to face criminal charges for your dog, but wouldn’t bey a dime on it. iow. I cant fix stupid, but i can point it out.

This will not end well.

You’re right about this not ending well.

One of the results of our living in a modern civilization is that most of us don’t have experiences of being attacked by dangerous animals who want to kill us and so the potential for an animal to do great harm isn’t taken seriously by some people.

I am a petite woman. Last September I was violently attacked by a Portuguese Water Dog. The dog bit both of my arms multiple times and was on his way to my face - all within about three seconds. Fortunately a man who was only steps away was able to pin the animal with a chair just before the animal reached my face.

Being in the grip and complete control of a raging, violent beast which was coming for my face was a new experience for me and, since I lived, I had the opportunity to learn some new things because of that experience.

I experienced the fragility of life and the helplessness of being in the frenzied, deadly control of an irrational beast.

I experienced flashbacks. That was fun. /sarc

I learned that some people value their violent, dangerous animal more than they value the life of a person.

I have no respect for any person who knowingly brings a dangerous animal into human society.

My heart goes out in a very personal way to the parents and loved ones of this precious child who this morning should be sleeping peacefully in her bed but, instead, is only a cold, mauled, and lifeless corpse.

May God help this stricken family eventually to find some peace and reprieve from the effects of this horror.

You're welcome. A new paragraph is achieved by typing < p >

before your new paragraph. Once you use any of the tags, you have to use the paragraph tag throughout when you need to break up your post. If you don't use any tags, you can just type normally and hyperlinks and paragraphs will work without coding for them.< p >

< i >italics< /i > As before, remove the spaces.

< b >< i >bold italics< /i >< /b >

You must close bold and italic tabs or the formatting will continue until someone closes it in their post. I don't know why but paragraphs don't have to be closed here.

My bet is the vast majority of the dogs involved in attacks on humans were not obtained from reputable breeders. IOW, breeders not involved in dogfighting. If we started prosecuting anyone involved in any way with dogfighting, including people who breed and/or sell dogs for it, we’d have far fewer killer pit bulls.
