A simple saliva test can identify the one in 100 men with a 50% chance of getting the disease and could be offered on the NHS to all men over 40 in a few years
The simple £10 saliva test could save thousands of lives.
It can identify the one in 100 men with a 50% chance of getting the disease, and the one in 10 with a 25% risk. The DNA discovery could mean most men not having to undergo invasive prostate examinations.
Professor Ros Eeles, of the Institute of Cancer Research, which led the research, said it could save the NHS millions.
She added: We now finally have a genetic profiling test we can try on the general population. If it does pull out these men at higher risk, which we think it will, it will mean only 10% of men need prostate cancer screening tests and the rest we can leave alone.
The researchers have identified 63 new genetic variations in DNA that predict the onset of prostate cancer.
It is the first time enough genetic mutations have been found to develop a test fit for clinical use.
Doctors are trialling it in London. If successful, it could be offered on the NHS in a few years to men over 40.
Those identified at increased risk in the pilot scheme will undergo MRI scans, a blood test and a biopsy.

In the early stages of the disease there are often no warning signs, but you and your loved ones should look out for:
Needing to urinate more often, especially at night.
Difficulty starting to urinate or a weak flow
Straining or taking a long time to finish urinating.
A feeling that your bladder has not emptied properly.
Needing to rush to the toilet you may occasionally leak before you get there.
Dribbling urine.
Leave alone? Really? FINALLY!
Hallelujah!
No more ‘digital’ testing!...............................
A collective awwwww was heard in San Francisco
Wonder what the privacy is on their DNA profiles?

NHS. It’s the government....................
Hmmmm...don’t more than 50% of ALL men who live a long life end up with Prostate Cancer??? It’s just not what kills them.
Just as I retired my wellness exam revealed an elevated PSA. Which lead to a biopsy which revealed that I had the early stage prostate cancer.
At the time there were 2 main courses of treatment “Slash and Burn” cut it out or radiation. Both with numerous side effects and dangers.
My urologist also mentioned that there was an experimental ultra-sound treatment.
Of course I went home and researched my options and found that less than 6 months before the FDA had approved the High Intensity Focused Ultrasound (HIFU) prostate ablation procedure. A day surgery with minimal risks so that is what I choose.
Of course because it was new it was difficult finding an oncologist doing that procedure but as luck would have it I found one in the Fort Worth suburb of Dallas. And of course because it was new no insurance would touch it so I had to pay out of pocket, thank God I have a 401k/IRA.
2 years later my PSA is undetectable and that means no prostate cancer.
Now there are commercials on the radio for that HIFU procedure.
You were very lucky, thanks be to God!.....................

btt
Just trying to get 2 things out to people who have the Y gene.
1. Men get a yearly PSA test. Prostate cancer is a painful way to die.
2. If your prostate cancer is caught in the early stages HIFU is the way to go.
Exactly, if we're lucky, we'll die of something else first.
Saliva test.... or doctor probing you rectally.... tough decision.
And you can still use your instrument. Good on you!
Just don’t choose both...............
Yeah, especially if your Doc can palm a basketball.
There are sections of town where choosing both would be a delightful preference...
