NEW ORLEANS - A Virginia man wolfed down 40 dozen oysters in eight minutes Sunday to win the World Oyster Eating Championship at the New Orleans Oyster Festival, the Times-Picayune reported.
Darron Breeden of Orange, Virginia, topped a field of seven contestants who participated in the annual contest, which is held in a park between the French Quarter and the Mississippi River.

Breeden put away 480 south Louisiana oysters to defeat defending champion Michelle Lesco of Tuscon, Arizona, who polished off 27 dozen bivalves, the Times-Picayune reported.
A little squirt of hot sauce after every ten? It may not matter - it's all going to the same place.

If I ate one oyster in eight minutes, it would be a world record. Yuck!

Yeah, I read the headline too quickly and I thought, "40 oysters? Eight minutes? I wouldn't like it (I prefer steamed clams) but I guess I can see a competitive guy doing it."
Reading more closely: 40 dozen. OMG.

I was a contestant in a Guiness World record boiled shrimp eating contest in Houston in the 1970’s.
The Guiness record then was 5 pounds, but I don’t remember the time limit. I ate 4 pounds and 15 ounces, but I unknowingly slowed myself down while doing it because I was drinking beer and eating hush puppies at the same time.

I hear oysters are a libido booster. I guess New Orleans was a good place to be after he won.

That’s an oyster a second for 8 minutes straight.

Regular oysters, or mountain oysters?

Ha—I was even worse, I saw it and thought, “40 oysters in 8 minutes? I bet I could do that!”
40 dozen oysters, ah, no.
To: ml/nj
Never cared for oysters.
