New treatment hopes to provide relief for 50 million Americans suffering from tinnitus

Tinnitus is a problem that plagues up to 15% of the American population. It's a constant ringing in the ears without a cure.

The American Tinnitus Association says hearing loss induced by loud noises or age is a frequent factor but trauma, ear canal blockages, and even taking some prescription medications can cause the ringing, a ringing for which there is no cure.

"I tried masking, including have to have a fan on when I went to sleep or having a machine that makes sounds like the sound of rain," said Nick Stein who suffers from tinnitus.

Nick Stein says he's tried just about everything to relieve the ringing in his ears. His doctors suggested he try the Levo System.

Dr. Yu-Tung Wong of Cedars-Sinai Medical Center says recently the FDA cleared therapy trains the brain to ignore the ringing.

"It's very difficult to say you are going to be able to make the sound disappear completely, what you're trying to do with most tinnitus therapies is to make the sound more tolerable," said Dr. Yu-Tung Wong.

The technology mimics the sound of a patient's tinnitus. The patient then listens to the sound on an iPod while sleeping for 90 nights nonstop. The brain becomes more accustomed to the sound over that time.

"At night time when you're sleeping, your brain is more plastic, it's more receptive to these kinds of changes," said Dr. Yu-Tung Wong.

Nick believes the sound of his ringing has been reduced by 50%. "My mood has improved, my focus has improved," Stein said.

He says he's grateful he can now go for days and hardly notice his tinnitus.

If you have tinnitus, search for — Tinnitus finger drumming technique. It works for many tinnitus sufferers, including myself. It seems to reset the threshold for what the brain considers process noise versus actual sounds. It took several days of doing this several times a day, but that was several years ago and now it is extremely rare for me to have any tinnitus; when I do I just do the exercise and it is gone. Before I had it all the time. My guess is those that get no relief have a problem with damage to the auditory nerve itself, but that’s just a theory.

I went to the VA just to get the free hearing aids and ended up with a 10% disability rating as well.
The whole process took about 3-4 months. Good luck ...

I’ve gotten pretty used to mine, but this might be nice to try.

Vietnam vets can receive a 10% disability and $136 a month for Agent Orange induced tinnitus. Proof is not necessary. Message me if you have any questions.

I once suggested that the Tinnitus Association name its publication The Buzz, but they didn’t think much of that idea.

So the program plays a ringing tinnitus tone that you listen to for 90 while you sleep, and your brain learns to ignore the sound.
I have tinnitus and the ringing is 24/7 all the time, and it has been that way for years. Why would 90 minutes a night train my brain to ignore it if constant round the clock ringing for years hasn't? I'm more than willing to try it, I just don't understand why real constant ringing wont train the brain to ignore it and 90 minutes a day in the head phones would.

Have you tried white noise hearing aids? The aids can be expensive, but are provided free via the VA.

My audiologist gave me digital hearing aids that relieve the tinnitus. No benefits for me (I got mine from playing in rock bands as a kid LOL), but the $4,500 cost was well worth it.

LOL, that is what I do every morning as a matter of course! I’ll try it with the vibrating water thingie)

After my stint in the USN, I vowed I would never take a “Navy Shower” again, and was going to eat up as much hot water as I wanted. Heh, I used to spend 20-30 min in water so hot it would turn my skin red (to help the back) while my wife rolled her eyes at me, but...I am now down to 20 min.

Funny-we had to have our bathroom redone, and when they made it “code”, the water was a maximum of some low number like 130 degrees or something like that, which to me, was like having a lukewarm shower. For months, I tried to figure out how to get the blasted thing opened up so I could monkey around with it, but didn’t know it was because the relatively inaccessible allen wrench screw was gummed up so no matter what I tried, I couldn’t get one in...couldn’t see why it wouldn’t go in.

Heh, when I finally DID, though, I set it as hot as I could stand it, and moved it up a few more notches...:)

If civilization goes down the crapper, I will miss food and shelter, but will probably dream of hot showers and miss them too! A wonder of the modern world!

I think it stimulates the nerves physically so that the brain will ignore it. ..................

If nothing else, I'd be very well reseted.

Navy showers suck, as do the tempering valves. I do think the secret is in the pulsating action.

Add me please. My tinnitus started when I was 17, with the onset of sudden and unknown total sensi-neural hearing loss on the left side. I also have resigned myself to it.

I can't socialize at all in a group party or setting with music playing or any background noise. I can only hear the one person right next to me. I am sure most people think I'm antisocial. I feel like a fish out of water and so isolated when I accompany my husband to events.

I can't complain about the tinnitus, because I'm so grateful to at least have some hearing.

Interesting. I thought everyone pretty much ignores the ringing, since I've had it for my entire life. It's just background noise, and I have to think about it to even hear it anymore.

It never goes away, though.

Large doses of NSAIDs, aspirin or ibuprofen, can WORSEN tinnitus!...................

NSAIDs and ibuprofen are poison. Try to avoid them anyway. Take Tumeric and MSM/Glucosomine/Chontroitin for inflammation/join pain.

"...Never quite understood that logic..."

LOL...I sure do! Living with ringing ears is easier than living with a bayonet in your guts! (I think I know what you mean, but...if you were in your fighting hole at night sleeping, or patrolling in a quiet area, you wouldn't stop to put your ear protection in if something broke out!)

I went shooting with three of my friends a while back, and we all had M1 Garands, which have a pretty loud report, and I remember taking my ear protection off for a second to gauge it...and I thought how astonishingly loud it must have been to be on a firing range with dozens or hundreds of them firing...

Or in large scale combat.
