CALDWELL COUNTY, N.C. - A 4-year-old Caldwell County girl was attacked inside her home by the family pet Wednesday.
Family members said they had just recently adopted the dog from the humane society in Catawba County.
Justina Turner, the child's mother, said she and her daughter were in the living room of her home south of Lenoir when the 3-year-old 60-pound dog suddenly attacked the child, biting her face. She said the dog bit down so hard on her daughter that she wasn't sure at first how she was going to get the animal off her.
Turner said the dog nearly ripped her daughter's right eye out, and the girl had to get several stitches around her eye.
"I was in such shock, Turner said. I didn't know what was going on. Once I got the dog away from my daughter and saw the blood, it was the most terrifying thing I've ever seen in my life."
The dog is in quarantine for 10 days to be checked for rabies at the Caldwell County Animal Shelter.
Turner said she didnt know the dog posed a threat because it seemed friendly when she adopted it.
"They really didn't tell us much about the dog, Turner said. They just told us to pick out a dog and to take it to the play yard to play with it. The dog seemed kid-friendly."
The humane society handles all adoptions in Catawba County from the intake to temperament screening prior to adoption.
"They're around these animals every day, said Paris Wright, a visitor at the Catawba County Humane Society. They see their temperament. They see how they carry themselves. So, I figured that's what they would be able to give me insight and they did."
Humane society officials said an adopted dog can act differently once it's in a home and around children.
Turner said people need to be careful adopting older dogs.
"I just want him out of the house, she said.
The Catawba County Humane Society adopts more than 1,000 dogs each year and has not had an issue like this.
The dog had been in the human society for more than two months prior to being adopted.

I am not posting the stories of the two persons mauled to death by pit bulls this week in South Africa, sources list below, because I usually only post stories of North America. http://occupymaulstreet.blogspot.com/ has the link to Times South Africa
Sad story all around.
That dog would never make it to quarantine if it bit my daughter...
pitbull = ‘dog of peace’
Yes, it is sad. Very glad she was not hurt worse. I do believe that the Humane Society had a responsibility to warn the new owner of the breed type, especially since this child’s mother seemed completely surprised on the video here.
Having just been adopted from the local shelter the week previous, it should have had its shot records for rabies available, and taken to the vet to be immediately put down.
“The dog seemed kid-friendly”
Famous last words...
I wonder if that term has actually been trademarked.
It might be worth money for a T-shirt logo.
The mother is a moron
Damn if they aren’t hiding the dog of peace aspect just like they do with muzzie attacks. No mention of the breed in the actual article, just in a related box of text. Then they have the gall to warn people about adopting “older” dogs. A little smoke and mirrors there. It’s the age, people, not the pitbull aspect - uh huh. Reads just like Ministry of Propaganda articles about psycho jihadists.
Owners fault the pro dog of peace lovers will be along shortly to explain it to you and shame you bigotness toward the dog of peace.
A friend of mine volunteers at a dog shelter and I asked her what was the most common breed of dog. She said at the shelter she volunteered at it was about 70% pit bull. She then went on to defend the breed and said that they are ‘misunderstood’, gentle and are only a problem if they’re not raised correctly.
Shortly after we had the conversation one of the ‘gentle’ pit bulls bit her hand which required an ER visit and stitches.
There’s a lesson here too obvious for many and I find it hard to believe that anyone with small children would bring a shelter (or any) pit bull into their home.
I mean, people are huge firearm afficionados but I've never once seen a case where a kid is killed by an accidental shooting and gun owners jumped in to delare it was the kids fault, the kid deserved it, etc. No, they will say the adult failed to do the right things, take the right precautions, follow the right safety protocols. They will say it's a terrible and tragic event and they feel for the child. Will they call for banning guns? No. But they don't attack the child! Pitbull owners do.
Thank you for posting the photo. I actually did not realize until I looked at your posting that in the whole written story the breed type of the dog was not mentioned at all, and in the video story including the interview with the mother, the term “pit-bull-type” was mentioned only once. It is actually quite rare for the dog itself to be shown, so I find this of extreme interest in reporting of dog attacks.
70% pit bulls? Hmmm.
Sounds like people are getting rid of the vicious beasts as fast as they can once they realize their mistake.
The excerpt doesn’t mention breed but I went to the site to confirm what I already suspected — pitbull attack.
True. This is part of what I am trying to make plain, as are other people. Since you have noted this as well, you may wish to check other postings with key words pit bull for other info on the subject. Please expect to wade through some vitriol.
Yep. Too bad it was the kid that got bit instead of the mother.
The only use for pit bulls: Pit bull = thit cho
Maybe.
But some people simply do not know anything about dogs.
I agree that no one should have a pit bull if there are children in the house. In fact, no one should have a pit....period.
But so many parents do not understand dogs. They will allow small kids to run to a strange dog, reach for him to pet him and worst of all, stick there face in the dogs face.
A dog considers all of there things hostile acts.
Years ago we traveled a lot and we always took our house dog with us. Little kids would constantly run up to her to pet her and the parents would totally ignore our demands that the kid not be allowed to pet the dog. Stupid parents and lucky for us no one got hurt although a few got a scare. She hated anyone under 16 years old.
I would bet that this kid stuck her face in the dogs face, probably to give it a kiss or worse even, a hug.
Not to defend pits....no pit will cross my farm.
