It was hard to watch Mark Zuckerberg's congressional hearing without liking congress a lot less. In between the rampant showboating and clumsy soundbites, it became clear that a lot of legislators don't know enough about technology to competently regulate it. And even if they did, the federal government's track record on surveillance and privacy rights is less than sterling.

Your last remark posits a very good question.
“Doesn’t Freedom of Speech include a freedom to lie?”
No one wants to answer that one.
Voter information is king. The king of voter information is zuckerberg.
Why would the major consumers of zuckerberg’s product want to kneecap the king?
What has occurred can not be undone so everything the little weasel says is a lot of cr**.
This is from ReasonTV, not YouTube management.
Doesn’t matter....It’s a crime to lie to Congress....period.
Just saw that.
Still - ANY service we use for FREE comes with a ‘price.’
I remember the Howard Hughes hearings. They were a circus act complete with clowns (senators). Hughes ate Senator Brewster (Lib Maine)for a snack. Called him a liar right to his face. Cross examined him like a pro lawyer and got him to admit he was in TWA’s hip pocket along with their wallet.
IFFA WOULDA SHOULDA COULDA...
IFFA WOULDA SHOULDA COULDA.
I worked with this guy we called “Wasgonna”
We traded stocks everyday and all we heard from him all day was, “I was gonna” buy that.
Facebook is a cesspool-I go on and just intentionally razz idiot Liberal schoolmates-—post music clips...laugh at all the self absorbed assh*&%^ posting endless selfies. Sheer stupidity on display—its good for a laugh.
It was a show. It was meant to make an ignorant public think that FB had been negligent and that there was a big bad conservative company that came in during the wee hours of the night and stole personal data and that clean shaven, suit and tie, just-visited-the-makeup-artist zuckerburg is clean as can be and had nothing to do with it and didn’t make a billion or two off our information.
Big joke.
A Morality Play for the holders of equities, bond funds and Futures speculators. “Oh, at least he acknowledged the problems! I’ll stay in for now, may as well finish the Fiscal Year!”
A perfect analysis. Wish I had written that.
There should have never even been a hearing. It’s all in the EULA, all the data is their data to do with as they please. This is what people signed up for.
Electric shocks from the thing on which he was sitting?
Bad decision.
Rumor is Mark did not write the code for fake book one weekend in his Harvard dorm room. He got it from the CIA.
With FB, I know how what I post relates to what they conclude about me. It feels intrusive but transparent. I know to avoid the cutesy tests and face recognition things. I don't post the same kind of strongly held opinions and facts that I like to remember there that I do here.
Google, meanwhile has tentacles into everything.
“”This is what people signed up for.””
Apparently that’s not true if it gathers information from anyone who is just reading from sites that have the FB sign...I don’t sign up for that when I click on links from FR or anywhere else. Perhaps I was late coming to the party but I just found that out this week and I don’t like it one bit. I don’t have anything to do with FB and I sure don’t appreciate being “spied on” under the table so to speak! Does this mean those like me are going to be forced to give up enjoying the internet because of some scoundrel who makes billions intruding on people’s lives?
I still haven’t found out if FB’s symbol on a site is an indication of FB getting in on the act or if it has to have the “like” finger on the site. I think the whole idea of it is juvenile anyway. A friend was defending her use of FB recently when I voiced my opinion of it, is to keep up with friends and family in other countries and I said she could do the same with the phone or email and she insisted “it just wouldn’t be the same. I need to see their pets and their flowers.” Good grief.
Outstanding post of the thread. I salute you!
Special consul Mueller should have sent to investigate him for collusion with Russia.
