DNA tests for IQ are coming, but it might not be smart to take one

Ready for a world in which a $50 DNA test can predict your odds of earning a PhD or forecast which toddler gets into a selective preschool?

Robert Plomin, a behavioral geneticist, says that’s exactly what’s coming.

For decades genetic researchers have sought the hereditary factors behind intelligence, with little luck. But now gene studies have finally gotten big enough—and hence powerful enough—to zero in on genetic differences linked to IQ.

A year ago, no gene had ever been tied to performance on an IQ test. Since then, more than 500 have, thanks to gene studies involving more than 200,000 test takers. Results from an experiment correlating one million people’s DNA with their academic success are due at any time.

The discoveries mean we can now read the DNA of a young child and get a notion of how intelligent he or she will be, says Plomin, an American based at King’s College London, where he leads a long-term study of 13,000 pairs of British twins.

Plomin outlined the DNA IQ test scenario in January in a paper titled “The New Genetics of Intelligence,” making a case that parents will use direct-to-consumer tests to predict kids’ mental abilities and make schooling choices, a concept he calls precision education.

As of now, the predictions are not highly accurate. The DNA variations that have been linked to test scores explain less than 10 percent of the intelligence differences between the people of European ancestry who’ve been studied.

This will be as scientifically meaningful as the Gore Bull working fake science if the left gets a hold of it.

The IQs will rise according to how much sub-Saharan dna one has.

I can just about guarantee that.

Assuming you mean such a “test” when you refer to “thing”. The other implication has been long proven and suppressed.

The elites want this in order to try and improve society.

The elites do not want to 'improve society'.

If you’re objectively substandard, you will be sterilized upon birth.

Even so, you will be at the top of the queue for becoming a politician or a college professor.

That is simply not true. Someone with an IQ of 80 will not be able to get a PHD, period. On the reverse, someone with an IQ of 180 could get a PHD in their sleep. I didn’t get a PHD but did get a MBA @ a Top 10 program. There were people in the program that barely did any effort and zipped right through and others that did 40-50 hours/wk outside of class to pass.

Notice they only tested Europeans?

If they want a more accurate reading, they’ll drop just about every advanced degree in the humanities from their considerations.

” At least three online services, including GenePlaza and DNA Land, have started offering to quantify anyone’s genetic IQ from a spit sample.”

All the DNA services are most likely already logging this information and are selling it to third-party users, like Obama’s huge election database, Google’s predictive algoritms, and other aggregators of Big Data On People. What they are offering you is for you to pay to see what they already have, or they can re-analyze a previous dataset.

Read those agreements you sign when you take a DNA test!

“Intelligence has nothing to do with getting a PhD nor 99.99% of all pursuits.”

Nonsense.

No other factor has greater impact on the course of a persons life.

Plunking down fifty bucks to take the test automatically puts one in the bottom half.

Sorry, not buying it.

A good work ethic (or lack thereof) has the greatest effect on the course of a person’s life.

Intelligence just smooths some roads.

Now I am NOT going to go into a discussion about people with abnormally low intelligence, since that is part of the < 1% (or so? Don’t know the stats and the 40+ million hiLIARY voters may throw the curve off).

If you pay $1000, do you get a better score ?

I don’t need to take a DNA or other IQ test. All I have to do is look at the things the various democrats, communists, socialists, fascists and other associated “liberals” are doing, saying, and promoting and I already know I am far more intelligent than those entire segments of the population and the sheeple that follow them. Just to keep me humble though, I look around FR here and realize I’ve got to stay on my A game just to be average here.

Intelligence has nothing to do with getting a PhD nor 99.99% of all pursuits.

All but the .01% (things like theoretical quantum physics) depend on hard work. Intelligence just makes it easier.

...

Intelligence and hard work is a combination hard to beat.

My readings on cognitive science say that being able to delay gratification is a better predictor of future success than IQ, anyway. The gibmedats don’t do well in either regard.

But that won’t stop them

I can only conclude that DNA will be used to determine fitness and those who are below 98% (I’m picking a number to share the concept) will be sterilized upon birth.

...

I doubt that will happen. Democrats discovered about 50 years ago that increasing the number of dummies with behavioral problems allows a corrupt government to thrive.

I’m closely related to a super genius. How many points do I get for that? Is there really a way to quantify this? (I know what the clan genius will say about it. Hint: starts with “ha ha ha.”)

Hard work is important. Intelligence is also important. If you doubt the latter, you need to get out more.

That is a great observation (I would have answered sooner but I was busy getting some candy).

I suggest delayed gratification is part and parcel of good work ethic but I understand if some might see that as moving the goalpost.
