Intelligence has nothing to do with getting a PhD nor 99.99% of all pursuits.
All but the .01% (things like theoretical quantum physics) depend on hard work. Intelligence just makes it easier.

My readings on cognitive science say that being able to delay gratification is a better predictor of future success than IQ, anyway. The gibmedats don’t do well in either regard.

That is a great observation (I would have answered sooner but I was busy getting some candy).
I suggest delayed gratification is part and parcel of good work ethic but I understand if some might see that as moving the goalpost.
