The Russian Ministry of Defense is looking to install the 25-ton monument in Elizabeth City, which is the near the headquarters of a secret WWII mission called "Project Zebra," in which hundreds of Soviet aviators were trained at a time when U.S. and Soviet forces were allied in the fight against the Nazis.
But the Elizabeth City council voted 5-3 on March 23 against a previously signed memorandum of understanding.
If the plan had come to fruition, the Russian Defense Ministry would have paid for the monument, with the city then covering some $228,000 for improvements to the park where it would be installed.

Soviet emblems being displayed in a place of honor, and any form of glorification of the Soviet Empire, have NO place on American soil in this context.
Worse, the Russian Defense Ministry is pretending as if this is some attempt to celebrate "co-operation" -- when in reality, under Putin, the World War II narrative taught in Russian schools, and mainstream among the Russian public now is pro-Stalin in its orientation and accusatory of America's taking "too much credit" for its contributions.
This is their attempt to rectify what they see as "overshadowing" of the Soviet legacy, which they want the world to celebrate rather than condemn.
The U.S. is better off erecting monuments to exemplary Soviet defectors and refugees...
The Red Army bled white the Nazis. By the time of Overlord the Germany army was a shell of its former self. A memorial can recognize Soviet pilots without glorifying the Communist ideology. Not their fault their leadership was so awful.
I’d reject it also.
Roosevelt should have stood aside and let Hitler and Stalin bash each-others brains out for a couple more years.
We went to war to free Europe from Nazi tyranny and wound up turning over half of it to Soviet tyranny.
bttt
This sounds like an innocent enough account of what went down.
But it's not.
And Stalin started World War II with Hitler. It is legacy upon which to look with shame and sobriety. NOT glorification.

I think things worked out just as Roosevelt and his leftwing administration were hoping they would.

Germany declared war on the United States first, not the other way around. Dec 11, 1941.
Progressive Roosevelt queered the deal at Yalta. Had he worked closely with Churchill, we might not have had 45 years of Cold War.
I think he's referring to Germany and the USSR carving up Poland in Sept 39'
Monuments to the Red Army don’t belong on American soil.
Did you notice the engine location?
I’d take the monument over Lenin’s statue they have in Seattle any day
Lots of Americans lived to be grandfathers because most of the German army was fighting the Red Army.
And lots of Russian men, including those who fought in the war, did NOT because they were sent to Stalin's Gulag camps afterward.
If the Russians build the memorial, it also means they are finally acknowledging in a small way the enormous amount of aid the US gave to Russia during the war — thousands of planes, tanks, etc; hundreds of yards of cloth, boots, cans of food.
I could look on that as a plus.
American soldiers fought for the freedom of speech and expression. Including that of clueless American hippies and their artistic statements. I find the Russian government far more offensive in their attempts to re-adjust a serious appraisal of the 20th Century to advance their revisionist agenda.
As the statue in Seattle attests: even without Russia's help, it's already bad enough that Lenin and the Sickle and Hammer, does not get met with the same aversion as Hitler and the swastika.
This must change. So good thing the North Carolina proposal was rejected.
