U.S. Electric Grid Vulnerable to Unprecedented Waves of Attack

The U.S. electric grid has become increasingly vulnerable to what the federal government is describing as an unprecedented wave of attacks that threatens to cripple the nation, according to a new investigative report that warns the energy industry is lagging in efforts to boost physical security of these critical sites.

Amid a wave of increasing attacks across the country on key power stations, the North American Electric Reliability Corporation, or NERC, has been struggling to force the power industry to enact a series of security improvements meant to stop would-be attackers and terrorists from crippling the nation's infrastructure.

Since 2014, "security risks to the power grid have become an even greater concern in the electric utility industry," according to a new Congressional Research Service report that warns the power industry "has not necessarily reached the level of physical security needed based on the sector's own assessments of risk."

AMEN - Preach it sister. I’m going to withdraw some extra funds from my IRA to replace shelf stable food that I’ve been using, before inflation or other incidents happen.

Plus every time we go to the grocery, I spend at least 10 bucks extra on things like salt, sugar, pepper, beans, rice, popcorn. It lasts forever and could become more precious than gold in a SHTF minute.

The smart thing will probably be for the security and protective agencies we finance and depend upon to ignore all of this for 5 or more years longer than they already have. Just like 9/11; just like any Russian interference in our elections; just like the Chinese who have been raiding our IP for at least 20 years. Like the USS Cole; like Bin Laden.

Ours is a country with unparalleled freedoms. We can not stop terrorism by micro-managing. The Homeland Security budget is humongous and ridiculous. How much time and money was wasted by 50 Billion people removing shoes at airports in 17 years?

The grid has been vulnerable for a while and we do nothing. I guess we deserve what we get if SHTF. I do know the grid is not as interconnected as one might think but the theory is that EMP attack could wipe out most of it. Only one way to find out if our government overlords rather spend money on illegals and murdering babies.

“threatens to cripple the nation,”

should read - “threatens to cripple some isolated parts of the Nation”

Texas is it own independent grid.

Alaska has its own independent grid and so on.

Whose idea was it to connect the power plants to the internet in the first place? We had a working grid before the internet even existed. As long as there is a path for tcp/ip traffic to reach the controls of the power plant, we will be vulnerable.

And I don't care if they have 100 firewalls; these are the same technocrats who told us the Titanic was unsinkable. God will not be mocked.

Prepper Ping - Electrical Infrastructure failure ?

"While to date there have been only minor attacks on the power system in the United States,
large-scale physical destruction of key parts of the power system by terrorists is a real danger," the academy warned.
"Some physical attacks could cause disruption in system operations that last for weeks or months."

For years, there has been concern, but most businesses and power producers await for the Federal govt. to fund national protection.
The government claims it is the power companies responsibility, and states that "The Grid" is a national Security issue.
The situation of who is going to pay for protection is currently at an impasse !
Choose your vulnerability source : Hackers, International Espionage, Nuclear Pulse, Solar Storm, or just 'Grid Collapse', etc.
It has been claimed that it isn't of question of who;.. it's just a matter of when !

As Diana says :" “When it happens, and it’s going to happen, the new currency will be the Calorie.”

I was reading about ATT and their 5g network. Their phone network will be over 50% open source software and can be updated remotely with 70% to be a goal in a few years. I wonder what will happen to the network when a hacker gets in and shutdowns all phone calls.
