The Weekly Gardening Thread is a weekly gathering of folks that love soil, seeds and plants of all kinds.
From complete newbies that are looking to start that first potted plant, to gardeners with some acreage, to Master Gardener level and beyond, we would love to hear from you.
This thread is non-political, although you will find that most here are conservative folks. No matter what, you wont be flamed and the only dumb question is the one that isnt asked.
It is impossible to hijack the Weekly Gardening Thread. Planting, Harvest to Table(recipes)preserving, good living - there is no telling where it will go and... that is part of the fun and interest. Jump in and join us!
NOTE: This is a once a week ping list. We do post to the thread during the week. Links to related articles and discussions which might be of interest are welcomed, so feel free to post them at any time.
We had a male goldfinch at our feeder the first week in February. He was a first year male. He stayed at the feeder awhile. I was glad of that because I could almost not believe my eyes. He was half turned a bright yellow. It was an amazing sight. Have not seen him since but given his bright color with no leaf cover - we are in the woods - he probably got nabbed by a hawk.
Well, all G-d’s Creatures gotta eat! ;)
We were watching an old ‘The Andy Griffith Show’ episode last night where Opie had raised a bunch of baby birds after killing the mama with his slingshot. (Life Lesson!)
So, he’s releasing them into the wild again and Beau says, ‘...and they were immediately nabbed by a Hawk!” LOL!
Circle of Life and all that. ;)
P.S. Ithaca says, ‘Hi!’ He’s so happy the worst of winter is over. Man, he’s lookin’ shaggy and mangy; only a mother could love him these days. ;)
I noticed.
Mr. mm LOVES peppers.
We have friends whoa re starting their peppers in their greenhouse and will do some for us.
I LOVE the bartering thing.
Can you send me a sample of this SNOW y’all talk about???
I’m glad you mentioned your lemon tree. This is my 3rd year with mine. Maybe it’s my poor memory but it sure seems like mine looks worse than last year. Spring ia here for our locale so I’m going to repot it in a slightly larger pot this coming week as I take it outside. It’s down to about 10% leaves. Yikes.
Thank you.
Snow and Icecream - reminds me that as a kid we used to scoop up clean snow and make Snow Icecream with cream, sugar, vanilla flavoring added.
I repotted mine last spring. I need to give it a bath-it’s dusty and likely has some sort of bug-I see some slick looking stuff.
Brought my hand tools up to the rent house this weekend. I’m going to spend the next two days in soil prep then start implementing the ideas you all have given me next weekend.
I had some nice areas enclosed by concrete sidewalks I used for my mint and lemon balm beds when I lived here. Dug up some white yuccas from the “wild area” out back of our new home and I’m going to put those in 2 of those beds. Those yuccas become invasive too but they grow the tall stalk with big white blossoms.
Also have 8 pots chock full of Mexican petunias to bring up next week and some wormwood for ground cover that I dug at home. Have a perfect spot for the bench that TIK suggested and going to put some ornamental grass behind and beside the bench to define and create a suggestion of privacy. Then will grab some bedding annuals to put in front.
Thanks for the ideas y’all :)
We have friends that do The Farmer’s Market thing - and they bought a pepper roaster that they take with them and will roast peppers for you right there at the market. Now that their kids are old enough, they’re in charge of that part and people just love it.
He’s such a brilliant add-on Marketing Guy...and having two adorable blue-eyed urchins to help doesn’t hurt, either!
We did that, too!
I remember watching a film strip in grade school about Eskimos. They would use fresh snow, whale oil and dried blueberries and make their version of an ice cream treat.
Whale oil? *SHUDDER*
Funny the things you remember! ;)
I love it when a plan comes together!
“Those yuccas become invasive too but they grow the tall stalk with big white blossoms.”
Amazingly, they survive up here in Zone 4, too. I love it when they bloom! I sold many of them when I worked for Jung’s, but normally for Rain Garden areas or people that had sandy and dry soil...or who moved up here from the South West and wanted SOMETHING that looked like, ‘Home.’ ;)
Two local businesses use them in their landscaping; they are really something when they bloom here in the late fall!
I remember hearing once that they made snow cones with whales blood.
I’d prefer the oil, thankyouverymuch.
Except try to get rid of a yucca.
Can’t do it.
We had a dog who loved to sniff daffodils as they came up
A little wood stove would be perfect. Load up on a few cords of wood and you’re set.
I’ve even thought of backing up my home heating with a wood stove. Still trying to convince ‘the wife’ hehe.
PM me and I’ll friend you on facebook. Pics there.
Lovely tulips, Tubebender. Weather in western PA has been variable with a light snow dusting the ground twice last week. More snow forecast Tuesday and Wed acc. to the weather app but we never know what that means this time of year.
