Researchers at Newcastle University, U.K. believe theyve discovered a differently evolved form of stereo vision in mantises. The research team studied the phenomenon in the insects precisely as one would hope by attaching a pair of tiny 3D glasses to their bug eyes.
The scientists attached a mantis-sized pair of dual-color 3D glasses to the insects eyes, using beeswax as temporary adhesive. The team then showed video of potential prey, which the mantises lunged at. In that respect, the bugs appeared to approach 3D image processing in much the same way humans do.

Did the bugs say, "Wow! Look at that!" and put their little hands out to touch it?
The photo with this article is great - the mantis in its tiny cool shades.
I wonder if the critter felt cool and hip?
Well... I guess wasting grant money (tax dollars) must be a global phenomenon.
What is the latest census computation for starving children?
Man, I miss SCTV. :-(
Dude, check out my cool Oakleys!
The 21st Century is sure strange. This week alone there was a story about a woman flushing her emotional support hamster. Now an article about 3-D glasses for a praying mantis.
Yeah he said he was famous now.
Dang I could go for some pancakes now.
Lol, true!
I swear I can smell syrup and butter!
> When I first read the headline I thought they put tiny 3D glasses on manatees.
I was just about to post EXACTLY the same thing !
LOL
“Well... I guess wasting grant money (tax dollars) must be a global phenomenon. What is the latest census computation for starving children?”
They discovered an entirely new type of 3D vision which is simpler to process and will be easier for machines to accomplish on a large scale. And shared it with the world.
Such technology can be used to improve automated farming machines that extensively use machine vision. This will feed and increase immunity in millions of people that would otherwise starve/die.
Sometimes inspirations for solutions lie in the strangest places and humans must never stop exploring
These are not the superior polarized 3D glasses we’ve become accustomed to, but the inferior red and blue filters.
Oh, the hue mantises!
When asked how they got the mantises to wear the glasses, the scientists said, “None of your beeswax.”
My 3rd grader had written, well, a very third grade paper on her "research" on manatees and had me mail it out to 5 or 7 researchers at universities that she had found the address for online.
I tend to think of these types of researchers as very focused serious and busy people who wouldnt have time to even look at mail from a kid. I was shocked when not only did all of them reply but they wrote back discussing her findings as though she were a peer!
Maybe when I grow up, if I dont become a space fighter pilot or rockstar, Ill study manatees too. They seem like a fun bunch of people to hang around with.
