The Weekly Gardening Thread is a weekly gathering of folks that love soil, seeds and plants of all kinds.

From complete newbies that are looking to start that first potted plant, to gardeners with some acreage, to Master Gardener level and beyond, we would love to hear from you.

This thread is non-political, although you will find that most here are conservative folks. No matter what, you won’t be flamed and the only dumb question is the one that isn’t asked.

It is impossible to hijack the Weekly Gardening Thread. Planting, Harvest to Table(recipes)preserving, good living - there is no telling where it will go and... that is part of the fun and interest. Jump in and join us!

NOTE: This is a once a week ping list. We do post to the thread during the week. Links to related articles and discussions which might be of interest are welcomed, so feel free to post them at any time.

That’s so cool. Our local college lets seniors audit classes for free. I have been thinking about going to one, but the gas would cost a lot - it’s about 30 miles away. So for now, I’ve just been reading stuff on the internet.

At some point in time, I might buy some books to study-cheaper than gasoline. St. Louis has casinos. You could make a stop over. If you do, I might get the courage to go there. I’d stay out of the ones on the Mississippi River.

There’s one in West County close to Earth City that’s supposed to be quite nice. I’m pretty much a stay at home gal. We almost never go anywhere. Our next big purchase will be an insert for the fireplace. If electric bills go too high, we will use that instead.

When the kids were small we had 2 fireplaces, and in the basement we had a wood stove. The furnace never came on. Our neighbor worked for the forest service. So all the men in the neighborhood went out and got the wood that was available from fallen trees etc. They don’t let you do that any more. We are right at the edge of Mark Twain Nat’l. Forest.

We have 20 acres north of town with plenty of wood, and quite a few trees in our yard that we would cut to use and make more garden beds, if we needed to grow more than we do now.

I am looking for a church that has an evening bible class. I was attending one that was for all religions in the AM. I just can’t seem to get my sleep schedule straightened out. I sleep between 7am and 1 or 8 pm. So I haven’t been able to attend.

So I have been doing my own bible study. I ordered the companion bible which has the original words and their various meanings. For example, The 4 horsemen Red, White, Black, and Pale. Well the word for pale is also green.

Ever notice that every single flag in Islamic countries is those exact colors? Interesting coincidence. I’ve been reading through the various chapters of Revelations and Genesis 6, and also looking at the Books of Enoch.

Ethiopia kept the book of Enoch, in their canon, but the confab that got together to determine who were the truly inspired writers decided Enoch didn’t qualify, so it’s not in the King James version, which is what I grew up with.

The nice thing is that there are quite a few bible teachings on the internet, and it’s nice that you don’t have to tell someone to their face if you think they are way off the beam. Just turn them off and don’t revisit. LOL

Hubby may plant some then too. But I usually plant mine a bit later. Usually my garlic is not ready to pull till June, and wheat harvest the same, so unless I have a open bed ready, I wouldn’t have any place to plant anything started that early, except for the things that I am going to grow in pots.

“St. Louis has casinos

There’s one in West County”

We have already been to all of those - twice. When we go north to Ohio/Penn./New York, we stop at those and others on our way up. We come back a different way and stop at casinos on that route south. I hate a plastic bag full of our cards for all those casinos.

Casinos are day care centers for seniors. They come with canes, power chairs or someone comes with them and pushes their wheelchairs. They are safe there, can get free soft drinks and have fun playing machines. Those of us who are still walking on our own, help them if they need help.

Last week, I was at a machine and an elderly little man sat down at the one next to me. He was not familiar with that machine. He left and came back with his daughter. She was standing behind him. He started playing the machine and a bell started ringing and he didn’t know why. I told him to look up, he had just won a $700 jackpot. He broke into a big smile as the ringing kept going showing the money going into where he could get it out of the machine. His daughter patted his shoulder and said to me, “He is amazing; he can do anything!” He took out his money and off they went, still laughing over his good luck.

I have not been to a Casino since I was a child and we went to the one in Reno Nevada. When the evening rolled around we were taken into a room to watch movies-couldn’t stay on the casino floor.

Is that wood boiler in the basement?

IIRC, it was one day last week. I wanted to do something to honor him. He spoke out against man made global warming, and of course received the blow back that happens when you dare to disagree with the liberal big wigs.

I began boiling down the sap to produce Maple Syrup today. The coming week is a little early but good sap flow conditions seem probable all week long.

I think a 50 year old maple tree counts as a garden plant when it produces maple syrup.

When I see Him, I will chastise Him for not including directions on seeds. I will also tell Him, He screwed up on our bodies - the cartilage cushion between our lower back bones don’t hold up and neither do knees. He needs to go back to the drawing board for these two items.””

We were not designed to live forever. Everything wears out. Knees and backs are but two. And, I know that you are as grateful as I am just to be alive in awe of all of God’s creation.

Never, never, never. It is about 50 feet west of the house and is also set up up to heat the machine shed when wanted. We got tired of carrying wood downstairs to the stove in the basement. The boiler is close to the wood pile under an overhang of the machine shed.

I plant hard neck cloves late in fall.
We always have a useful crop.

I remember ‘quakes in Yokohama when the streetcar bounced off the track from a big “up and down” event.

Doing another haybale garden this year....

Had mixed results last year...but learned a lot.

My last year bales..well some have imploded. I will place more in there place...after clean-up. I'm going to build some higher...better on my back...and can hold more H20....

Here,,,in NE OK....I think I can start some potatoes..maybe some lettuce, carrots, etc,...in 2-3 weeks. Had some crowns of asparagus..that I need to move.

The Bender family large and small live in one of the most seismically active areas on the west coast. We had a 5.8 a few days ago and didn’t even notice it...

I have forgotten how to post photos using HTML

I had very much luck wrapping my bales with pallet wrap plastic. Last year I just wrapped the sides and the ends....but did not wrap the inner bales...and I think that way the inner bales deteriorated faster than the outside bales......

This year I think I will wrap the whole thing...then cut holes in the tops and bottoms...or expose them much more...as I had some issues with the bales drying out....

That or I hook up the drip system that I bot...but did not use...last year.

Another thing..I will do different is layering in some top soil on the bales..after I get them primed.

Like I said....I learned a lot...and maybe have better results this coming growing year....

That all said....it's so much easier on my back...and WAY less weeds.

I got mine in the ground late this fall. They are less than an inch tall. Not sure how it will turn out.

We do potatoes April 1 in Missouri. One of my favorites to plant. Because we get an adequate rain in spring, potatoes are a plant it and forget it crop.
