ANCHORAGE, Alaska Winter is off to a late start in parts of the nations largest and usually coldest state.
Months of higher-than-normal temperatures in parts of rural Alaska have opened dangerous gaps in frozen rivers that residents use to travel from village to village and to hunting grounds, since there are no roads.
One troublesome ice highway is the half-mile-wide Kuskokwim River, where a man died New Years Eve after he and five family members traveling on a snowmobile and sled fell into a gaping hole. The others survived.

Oh no!!!! They want their blizzards back??
For no good reason at all, I casually track the temperature in Nome, Alaska on my cell phone. Yesterday was the first day I recall that Nome was colder than Boston. I’ve been sitting through -12 degree nights, and days where +15 is a pleasure and I keep looking at Nome and they’re 26 or even above freezing. Yesterday Nome was -4 or something and I felt like maybe the world was finally getting back to normal.
Weird.
Had the same thing happen to me while snowmobiling on the Yukon river in ‘79. It happens. I was lucky.
They don't have Wal-Marts in Alaska? People have to hunt to survive?
Yes, the vast majority of smaller communities, especially out near the coasts, have little more than a small general store (if that), and have to supplement their diets by hunting. There are 9 Walmarts in all of Alaska, and seven of them are in or around Anchorage.
According the climate change hoaxers, unseasonably warm weather is climate, but unseasonably cold weather is just weather.
"...fell through the ice..."
Do Warmists deny that Alaska was much warmer during the last massive glaciation — mile of ice over Chicago but ice-free corridor through Alaska.
Are Warmists the real “deniers”?
You beat me to it!
There’s no place like Nome............
There’s no place like Nome............
There’s no place like Nome............
click heels together three times............
Alaska Ping.
Brace yourselves, spring is coming.
I think the NJ/NY region has their cold weather, it has been like 6-12 degrees for a few weeks, never had that before here. It finally warmed up to about 20s now. Coldest winter we have had in a while. Glowbull warming!
Because some dumbass left the back door open and all the cold flowed down to the eastern half of the lower 49 states........
and the poor Polar Bears......guess they are starving too.... sarc/
It is the Jet stream and the way this year it’s trajectory is taking a different track than it has an average in the past.
But, as anyone who looks at enough different temperatures in enough places, the global average temp is likely not affected all that much, because while some are colder than “usual” others are warmer, so the total heat-cold distribution-balance is not so different.
Isn't that a bitch when you get so used to the cold that 15 and 20 degrees actually feels warm? It's 30 degrees and sunny here in S.E. Michigan and I'm thinking of shoveling the snow off my back deck and going out and lie in the sun and start working on my tan.......
The bottom of Alaska is a huge rain forest; it isn’t all tundra and polar bears.
People are dying?!?!?
Oh my GOSH!! PLEASE!! Congress, do the RIGHT thing!! - TAX US MORE to fix this!!!!!
