An engineer who was fired by Google for circulating an anti-diversity memo sued the company this week, alleging that the tech giant discriminates against white, conservative men. Hes likely not alone in that belief.
There are other white men working in tech who believe their gender and race are making it difficult for them to get ahead, according to a survey by the Pew Research Center about diversity in the science and technology fields.
Pew asked a nationally representative sample of white men with jobs in science, technology, math and engineering (or STEM) fields whether they thought their gender made it harder for them to succeed. Of the 14% who said yes, more than 1 in 10 said they had been affected by reverse discrimination.
When Pew posed a similar question about race to the survey respondents, nearly 20% of those who said race made their job harder cited reverse discrimination as the reason for their challenges. [ ]
[T]here are a variety of factors that may make white men in STEM perceive themselves as victims of discrimination. Men have a tendency to believe that decreasing bias against women is associated with increasing bias against men, said Clara Wilkins, a professor at Wesleyan University who studies the psychology behind reverse discrimination.

I wonder how she would feel if her University started “decreasing bias against men”....?
White conservative guys got that in the TV field.
I lived it. My bigger boss was a big liberal white man. It got to the point I had a meeting with him and spoke my mind. He got the picture when I mentioned veteran and discrimination.
Gee, ya think?
The article says that reverse discrimination is unlikely, but the reaily is, if you’re white, male, and especially middle-aged, you are absolutely discriminated against. They won’t even talk to you.
There is the “pre-screening” which is under the guise of EEOC.
Are you:
1) White
2) Male
3) Disabled
4) Veteran
5) Disabled Veteran
These are the equivalent to “Irish need not apply”.
I can guarantee you that I was this past year (not hired because I’m a ‘white’ male)...hiring committee broke all the ‘rules’...details too numerous to mention...thought about legal action but chose not to do so.
Maybe the writer should talk with the 15k HP employees fired back in 2004 and forced to train in their replacements from India.
Na, that would make them “Reporters” instead of part of the Media Propaganda Machine.
Welcome to my world, middle aged, white Techy.
Go to the back of the bus, Oh wait! I aint allowed on the bus.
Yup
Yep, some of us have dealt with it. It’s a silent epidemic, as far as the media or pretty much anyone else is concerned.
Pretty much pissing on the Men who built America.
Now You want to wield that which we built and shun us?
They give licenses in some professions to people who fit their pet categories. I have a master’s and regularly get “supervision’ from women who have a bachelor’s degree, but bureaucratic approval.
Just claim to be white-Hispanic. Or check the other box.
Been happening for quite a while. Toughen up boys!!
Us Crackers have to stick together and beat these pansies.
Yes.
And then there are all the fake job postings put our “to comply with EEOC” when they have already chosen their candidate. The job either disappears very quickly and/or sets hoops that virtually no one could hop though (i.e. qualify for).
Saw this 10 years ago when a “boss” decided - “Hey what if we got ONE guy who could do all THREE jobs?!”
He truly thought he was brilliant with that one. Or original.
It was all I could do to bite my lip and NOT say “Anybody like that isn’t going to work for 1/3 (or less) of what they could get consulting, or more, nor put up with your drama queen fits.
I didn’t say a thing. He was announcing it to about 3 other people so I let them pat him on the back for “brilliant thinking”.
I say, why not get a guy who can do all 150+ jobs? Then we could REALLY save some money!!
“Pretty much pissing on the Men who built America.”
Which men that built America have been denied a job because they are white?
“These are the equivalent to Irish need not apply.”
And over 36. That was told to me by a fried at the VA.
Can’t get a STEM job?
Change your name to Vishnu Patel.
Your phone won’t stop ringing.
Yes, they, having received the benefits of what they built, would have all of America become Detroit, Baltimore, L.A.’s worst parts and Chicago’s South Side.
I sure hope they like what they’ll get because there will be no turning it around if it reaches that level.
