How to survive an APOCALYPSE: Expert reveals the five key things city dwellers should do (tr)

From Hurricane Irma to the Northern California wildfires, this year has seen its fair share of natural disasters.

These disasters may have you thinking about what you should do in the eventuality one hits your city - how do you prepare and should you think about leaving?

According to an expert, a lot of what drives large-scale evacuations is mass hysteria and fear, and most natural disasters don't require an immediate evacuation because they can be predicted, for example hurricanes.

However, there are certain things city dwellers can do in preparation for a sudden disaster.

John Renne, the Director of the Center for Urban and Environmental Solutions at Florida Atlantic University, told The Week that while people don't necessarily need to evacuate during disasters, they should be prepared for one.

Firstly, Renne recommends that people should plan on staying in their homes and cities as opposed to fleeing.

This is because there aren't many situations where you would need to evacuate an entire city.

And for some types of disasters, such as chemical attacks, it's safer to stay indoors rather than leave. Even during the September 11, 2001 attacks in New York City, only a small part of the city required evacuation.

It's more common to require evacuating only impacted sections of cities rather than entire cities.

Toilet paper is #30? It goes in the top 5, along with water, guns, ammo, and wine.

Have you ever been in the woods, a desert, or a wilderness for longer than it took to drive through?

Toilet paper is flimsy because we flush it after use. All the guys I hunt with carry a few sheets of paper towels. One per use. It is soft enough, and you don't flush it you throw it away. It is strong enough that you do not have to worry about the dreaded "finger poke through", which is a real sanitation problem in primitive circumstances. Do you really think that nice flush toilet is going to be working after a real disaster? A small pack of baby wipes and some paper towels are the woodsman's friends.

When I see matches and TP on a list, I know it was written by someone with a lot more experience on a keyboard than with wilderness living. Forget the matches in favor of a disposable lighter. At the beginning of every hunting season I buy a five pack and write the year on them with a marker. A lot more fires in those than in a box of matches, and they recover from getting wet. Learn to light a small twig and use that as a match. Next year get new ones, and give the old ones to people who smoke. Pack a few birthday cake candles in your kit. Light one of those and you can make a fire in the damp, cold, rain, snow and dark.

Last tip of the day: if you really want to prepare for a disaster drive out to the nearest wild area, park and hike in for 5 minutes. Then practice going #2 without any facilities. I bet you can't without getting it in your pants, on your shoes and just all over. Making that kind of a mess in a stressful situation is going to lower your survival chances and make you a social outcast.

“Makes a good boat anchor, but its the only currency that will work if at all.”

Liquor. Ammo. Potable water. Jerky. Medical supplies, including aspirin. Flashlights. Batteries.

All sorts of “currencies” that are far less expensive and useful to you prior to bartering.

Prepper Ping - Urban/City location Prepping

John Renne, director of the Center for Urban and Environmental Solutions at Florida Atlantic University says "A lot of what drives big evacuations is often mass hysteria,.."
#1 Many times its best to stay put in your home where you have knowledge of your surroundings and resources, also known neighborhood resources locations.
#2 Be prepared to leave at a moments notice (seasonally adjusted -"Go Bag")
#3 Stock up on appropriate supplies (food, water, first aid kit, medications, spare glasses, flashlight, etc.,etc., etc.)
Remember the Prepper Rule : "One is none, two is one, three is two, etc."
#4 Situational Awareness : OODA Loop
#5 Relax - an emotional 'knee-jerk' reaction, without thought or logic, will more likely lead to negative consequences.

How long will it take for the fish and game to disappear when you and 1000s of others that didn’t keep anything back, take to the woods? 2-3 days/weeks>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

I choose mobility. No problem with game that way.

Nomadic vs. agrarian.

I chose nomadic.

What use will your gold and silver be?

The only thing it is good for is after the US dollar collapses or is no longer the reserve/default currency.

Whatever scrip replaces it, the gold and silver will allow you to "buy back in" and join the new economy...once it is established in God knows how many years. So the gold and silver you hoard is asset protection only. But, small pieces of silver can be used for barter. Which is why pre-1962 US coins (90% silver) are getting near impossible to find.

Didn’t pieces of jewelry allow some of the Russian aristocrats to escape the bolcheviks?

Some.

Most of them just got robbed and murdered.

The ones who got out the most successfully were those who had people already out who were willing to pay for their safe delivery.

As a charter member of the Free Republic Boating Club, I would warn people against this strategy. You would be surprised how often boats overturn when loaded with guns and ammo. >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

Well , I lost ALL of my guns that way! :-)
