A diet designed to imitate the effects of fasting appears to reverse diabetes by reprogramming cells, a new USC-led study shows.
"Cycles of a fasting-mimicking diet and a normal diet essentially reprogrammed non-insulin-producing cells into insulin-producing cells," said Longo, who is also a professor of biological sciences at the USC Dornsife College of Letters, Arts and Sciences. "By activating the regeneration of pancreatic cells, we were able to rescue mice from late-stage type 1 and type 2 diabetes. We also reactivated insulin production in human pancreatic cells from type 1 diabetes patients."
The reprogrammed adult cells and organs prompted a regeneration in which damaged cells were replaced with new functional ones, he said.
In type 1 and late-stage type 2 diabetes, the pancreas loses insulin-producing beta cells, increasing instability in blood sugar levels. The study showed a remarkable reversal of diabetes in mice placed on the fasting-mimicking diet for four days each week. They regained healthy insulin production, reduced insulin resistance and demonstrated more stable levels of blood glucose. This was the case even for mice in the later stages of the disease.
The diet cycles switched on genes in the adult mice that are normally active only in the developing pancreases of fetal mice. The genes set off production of a protein, neurogenin-3 (Ngn3); thus, generating new, healthy insulin-producing beta cells.

The pharmaceutical companies wish you didn’t see this.
Improvements can even be made by narrowing your eating window to 8-10 hours a day or fasting one day a week.
“Humans aren’t mice.”
Good news. Heroes are not the folks on the basketball court or on a football field. Heroes are the folks in the research labs.
Type 2 diabetic here. Avoiding refined carbs (white flour and white rice) does the trick for me.
The study was also done on humans with the same effect.
I wonder how they could adapt this to those with low blood sugar. My grandmother died of pancreatic cancer, too, so I have been reading what catches my eye in this regard.
Their study published last week in Science Translational Medicine demonstrated that the fasting-mimicking diet reduced risks for cancer, diabetes, heart disease and other age-related diseases in human study participants who followed the special diet for five days each month in a three-month span.
My A1C was at 7.5. I read the book and started following the 36 hour fast regiment. It was actually kind of fun. Two months ago my BP was down (117/80)...I lost 9 pounds and my A1C was 6.9
My doctor said, "Whatever you're doing, keep it up.
when folks started getting unexpectedly cured of T2D after bariatric surgery, it soon became clear that a near-starvation diet with nearly zero carbs for a few weeks would break the deadly insulin-increase-cell-receptor-decrease death spiral and reset the sensitivity of cell insulin receptors once they were no longer having to protect themselves from being poisoned by massive amounts of insulin.
As far as established T1D is concerned, a “cure” by diet alone is complete hogwash as in T1D, autoimmune attacks on the Islets of Langerhans have irreversibly destroyed the pancreas’ ability to manufacture insulin.
interesting

Formerly pre-diabetic here: Reducing my fast carb consumption to almost nothing did it for me. If you want to be healthy don’t each sugar or fast carbs.
Pretty much every study on this issue supports the same finding: fasting, or a ketogenic diet (you go into ketosis whether fasting or on the keto diet), ends up repairing the body, reversing disorders, and making you stronger. Even tumors have been observed either to stop growing or get absorbed by the body by such methods, though it doesn’t work for everyone. Might depend on the type.
This isn’t good if you’re like an African and one day without food will turn you into a snack for a vulture. But if you are overweight, have diabeties, are at risk for cancer, or even have cancer, you should be considering fasting or a keto-diet.
Biological reset button.
Keep in mind there is a vast industry built up around maintaining the “diabetes crisis” here in America.
This regimen may even be useful against a number of other maladies that plague individuals of all ages, with HUGE ramifications in regards to the delivery of health maintenance services.
P4L
The studies Ive posted show you wont have to go low carb for life if you dont want to.
It resets your body.
“P4L”
Thanks for the hip internet lingo. Idiots like me actually looked it up....one site defined it as “Partnership for Learning”, another as “Supposed to be pimpsters for life, but is really pus*ys for life, pansies for laughing at. A bunch of stuck up dumbasses who think they’re badass.” Thank you for your thought provoking post. You must be one hip, bada*s dude.
This is how I’ve lived for the last 20 years. One major meal at dinner for at least 5 days a week. The 3 square meals a day is bunk unless you like being large.
