Hollywood screen siren Hedy Lamarr acted throughout the 1940s and 50s in romantic scenes with the likes of Clark Gable and Jimmy Stewart – but in her down time, the brunette beauty created and patented a scientific invention that paved the way for Wi-Fi and Bluetooth technology, according to a new documentary.

“Bombshell: The Hedy Lamarr Story” – produced by actress Susan Sarandon — premiers Wednesday in London as part of the Jewish Film Festival.

The documentary touches on the 35 Hollywood films the sizzling brunette made — including one she filmed at 17 where she portrayed the first female orgasm ever shown in a non-pornographic film — but it’s more about her part in the development of a radio frequency meant to scramble military messages.

She didn't develop a radio frequency. That's absurd. She did develop a way to hop around between different carrier frequencies as a way to make it hard to intercept transmissions unless your receiver is synced up to tune in those same frequencies at all the appropriate times. Anyone listening on just one frequency would just hear static. The receiver has to tune to the correct frequency at the right time, then to the next correct frequency at the right time, etc. This idea was extended and came to be called spread spectrum and yes, it's used in WiFi primarily to prevent different nodes from interfering with each other. Heddy Lamaar was a hot science babe.

Considering beauty and brains generally equals a constant, Hedy Lamarr was a remarkable woman indeed.

Megan Fox comes the closest to Hedy’s level of beauty.
Sad that such a fine mind as Hedy Lamar became kleptomaniac in her later years.

Her compulsion to shoplift may have been from advancing alzheimers.
People didn’t talk much about that condition back then.
They just called the senior citizen ‘senile’.
Or maybe she was just down on her luck.
Not all actresses of that time had the best agents or managers. Her wealth may have been quietly stolen over time.

Frequency hop is a natural process. Natural cannot be patented but she was given a lucky privileged monopoly.

Inventing something having a transmitter and receiver change carrier frequencies on a preplanned schedule isn't natural and I wouldn't say it was obvious either. The only shortcoming was trying to get both sides run synchronously - they had a tendency to get out of synch without a high precision timer or some self clocking signal.
