Archaeologists unearth 'masterpiece' sealstone in Greek tomb

The "Pylos Combat Agate," as the seal has come to be known for the fierce hand-to-hand battle it portrays, promises not only to rewrite the history of ancient Greek art, but to help shed light on myth and legend in an era of Western civilization still steeped in mystery.

The remarkably undisturbed and intact grave revealed not only the well-preserved remains of what is believed to have been a powerful Mycenaean warrior or priest buried around 1500 B.C., but also an incredible trove of burial riches that serve as a time capsule into the origins of Greek civilization.

But the skill and sophistication of the Pylos Combat Agate is unparalleled by anything uncovered before from the Minoan-Mycenaean world, say the researchers. And that raises a bigger question: How does this change our understanding of Greek art in the Bronze Age?

One common M.O. seems to be that the Greeks conquered Egypt and stole everything in the Library of Alexandria -- an interesting claim, considering that Alexandria was founded by Alexander of Macedon and its great library founded by the dynasty begun by his general Ptolemy. The obvious unfitness to teach should have led to such a-holes not being hired, to say nothing of getting tenure or working past their probation period.

I think this was true of a lot of Egyptian art as well. They depicted things in the stylized way that they did for philosophical/religious reasons, not simply because they couldn’t master realistic perspective.

Wow. must have weighed a lot... Amazing craftsmanship in this ancient art. It’s interesting to think of how much men knew about metallurgy so early in civilization. How in the world did they (besides simple trial and error and experience) discover alloys, their properties, and proportions of each additive? My puny brain needs 3 in 1, I think.

I was originally a physics major who lost it in my last year to Schroedinger Equations. Mother, a fine arts major, convinced me to switch into History of Art and she was, as usual, right. Never cried in physics classes except in frustration. But a French Impressionist painting that filled the entire front of the auditorium - total tears.

It's not too late. Never too late. There are some really great art sites out there. If you don't mind breasts, as some of the FRs seem to, I have a huge subsite on a book of classic French nudes from 1902. The book originally belonged to my grandmother, who had studied with the sculptor Lorado Taft at the Art Institute in Chicago. Mother studied in his studio, as I did in my time.

I was experimenting with the problem of how to make a website of a book as easy to navigate as holding a physical book in your hand, so there are multiple ways of looking at the same book, as well as in-depth sections on each of the artists mentioned in the book.
