I think this was true of a lot of Egyptian art as well. They depicted things in the stylized way that they did for philosophical/religious reasons, not simply because they couldn’t master realistic perspective.

EXACTLY. If you look at their minor figure sculptures, they're perfect portraits of the individuals. It's in the royal figures that you find that stylizing.
