Arrowverse Crossover: Quantico's Russell Tovey Cast as Gay Superhero
TV Line ^ | September 22, 2017 | Michael Ausiello

Where there’s a will, there’s… The Ray: Quantico and Looking vet Russell Tovey has been tapped to play gay superhero The Ray in The CW’s four-part Arrow-verse crossover, TVLine has learned. What’s more, Tovey will also voice the role of The Ray in CW Seed’s forthcoming animated series Freedom Fighters: The Ray.

The official character description for The Ray is as follows: Raymond “Ray” Terrill was a reporter who discovered a group of government scientists working on a secret project to turn light into a weapon of mass destruction. But before he could report on his findings, the project head exposed Ray to a “genetic light bomb.” The bomb failed to kill him and instead gifted Ray with light-based powers. With these abilities, Ray realized he could go beyond reporting on injustice — he could take action to help stop it. Calling himself The Ray, he was recruited by Uncle Sam and the Freedom Fighters to fight violence and oppression wherever it exists.

The Ray first appeared in a 1973 issue of Justice League of America; the animated series’ Ray will be closer to the version of the character in DC’s Multiversity series, which updated the Freedom Fighters to look more like current-day Americans. Freedom Fighters: The Ray will debut on The CW’s digital channel in 2017.

Last year, CW boss Mark Pedowitz hinted that The Ray would eventually show up in one of The CW’s live-action Arrow-verse shows — much like Megalyn E.K.’s Vixen on Arrow.

This year’s four-part crossover will air across two nights Monday, November 27 and Tuesday, November 28 on The CW. For this crossover event, Arrow will air on a special night Monday at 9/8c following Supergirl, while the other DC shows will remain in their regularly scheduled time periods.

So, it was a genetic light-in-the-loafers bomb?

I watched Quantico a few times, if they didn’t have all of these gay overtones and probably other pc stuff, it might have been watchable. Never again.

Piss poor journalism:

The Ray first appeared in a 1973 issue of Justice League of America.

Incorrect. The Ray, along with a number of others (Uncle Sam, Phantom Lady, The Human Bomb, Black Condor) were first published in the 40s. The companies (I believe Quality Comics - I’ll have to confirm) assets were acquired by DC comics about the same time they acquired Fawcett’s (known for Capt. Marvel/Shazam)in the early 1970s. The 1973 appearance was the first DC appearance.

He wasn’t gay until the last 10 years or so...like a lot of others including Alan Scott the original Green Lantern.

This co-opting and rewriting has made me stop buying new stuff. I only purchase older comics now (~1990 and prior) to fill gaps in the collection.

The first Ray, Lanford Terrill, came out in 1940. Ray Terrill (first published 1992) is the original’s son.

The 2016 “DC Rebirth” version of Ray Terrill is the homosexual one.

Six years later, Miles Morales is the least-popular version of Spidey.

The Toei version from the Japanese TV show, Yamashiro Takuya, is more popular.

I’m aware of the son Ray, but even in the 2006 and 2007 Uncle Sam and the Freedom Fighters volumes he wasn’t gay... in fact in issue 1 of the 2006 series right after the initial fight with Doll Man he came back to a very nubile young lady in his bed... hmmmm. So yeah it’s been in the last 10 years. (I just got that series in a dollar box about a month ago - very nice read for the price).

Just watch .. all the words co-opted to describe homosexuals over the years have become tainted and unpopular in practical use. Such will be the rise and fall of the popularity of superheros. Once comics have been co-opted to support homosexuality, they will no longer be read, with the exception of a homosexual fan base. I quit watching Arrow and Once Upon a Time. They are no longer "fun". I doubt I am alone in that. I will never pay to see a homosexual spiderman movie. It's just not going to happen.

Never understood why they had to change characters when they could make brand new ones. Even now it doesn’t make sense because they also made however many new green lanterns.
