By its very nature, the sci-fi genre is relatively complex: the short stories, novels, TV series and films that comprise speculative fiction necessitate detailed expository passages to build its far-flung futures, reality-bending premises, and stories set in a galaxy far, far away.
Whether the story is set on an alien world populated by creatures markedly different from human beings, in a future separated by centuries or eons from the present in which society, technology, science, and civilization itself have evolved into a nearly unrecognizable state, or center around time or space travel, sci-fi stories require complex set-ups to create a believable reality thats very different from our own.
Because of this, the sci-fi genre also allows for its stories to become quite complex. Time travel stories thrive on complexity while, depending on the story, other elements may be willfully obtuse to create an air of mystery or disorientation in the viewerand some sci-fi stories are much more complex than others.
Here are 10 sci-fi films that are purposely complex ...

Nothing about the Alien prequels? Or am I the only one who did not get them?
I have always thought 2001: A Space Odyssey was the best science fiction movie I had ever seen, possibly the greated sci-fi movie of all time. Had to watch it a couple of times to start to get it, but I really got a better understanding of it after I read Arthur C. Clarke’s novel on which the movie was based. It is really outstanding, and the special effects still hold up, for a movie made in 1968 that is remarkable. Just my .02
Doppleganger from the 70’s (there is another movie named Doppleganger, that is not Sci-fi) still is one of the most complex movies I have seen.
#3
If you watch Inception closely you can spot up to 7 levels (not 4).
Considering the amount of ice that you can pick up for free floating around in space it made no sense to go rob another planet of it's water.
After the first fifteen minutes it began to bore.
The rest was just pitiful.
Where is Interstellar? That’s more of a mindbender than Inception in some ways. Both Nolan though
Complex, or incoherently nonsensical?
Outland.
The only one I have seen is 2001. I thought it was awful.
I had rather enjoy watching them than try to figure out what they are doing since very little of it is actually something which could really happen.
I think my favorite one was “Forbidden Planet” which had an interesting theme. Also the original “Invaders from Mars”.
I loved “Star Wars” then it began a long slide.
I say Outland.
Saw #3 and loved it but probably for the wrong reason. Didn’t like #1.
Does that include the possibility that the whole thing was inside somebodies dream, or would that make 8?
The Lathe of Heaven (1980)
Minority Report (2002)
Primer would be a lot less confusing if it wasn’t so mumbly
Space Herpes!
I’m sorry but Solaris was one of the worst movies of all time, Sci-Fi or otherwise!
It was complex, it was just crap.
