Bible passage used to stop women become ordained 'added later', academic claims

A key Biblical passage which has been used to prevent women from being ordained is not original and was added later, an academic has claimed.

The section of Corinthians which says women must remain silent in church has been used to justify restricting the priesthood to men. But recent research has suggested that the passage was not written by the Apostle Paul, as is widely believed, but was instead added later. Now an academic claims to have discovered a key symbol which proves the passage was not original.

Research published in the journal New Testament Studies casts doubt on the section, 1 Corinthians 14:34, which says: “Women should remain silent in the churches. They are not allowed to speak, but must be in submission, as the law says.”

In the article, published by the Cambridge University Press last week, US academic Dr. Philip Barton Payne claims that a symbol next to the passage shows that the writer, known as “Scribe B”, believed it was not part of the original but had been added later. His analysis of the Codex Vaticanus, one of the oldest versions of the Greek Bible in existence, identifies a symbol called a “distigme-obelos”, which appears next to the relevant passage. He says scribes used these symbols to identify added text, which did not appear in the original, and identifies several other cases where they were used. […]

However, other scholars have criticized Dr. Payne’s interpretation. Opponents point out that while the passages appear in different places in different versions of the text, they are not absent completely from any version. …

2000 years later.

Todays scholars are smarter than the early church fathers.

He doesn’t like that passage and, poof!, surprise, surprise, he denies the cannonicity of it.

I tremble at the thought.

For every social shift man might want to make an “academic” can be found to claim some problem with the Bible. “Academics” must be smarter than the Spirit of God Who said that He would preserve His words.

Was it added later after experience showed it was necessary?

As copy after copy were hand-written...it was a common practice for copy-makers to add foot-notes (something that is rarely done in today’s world). So you’d have some copy-maker get a Greek translation of a particular Hebrew text. The objective of the copy-maker...was to take the translation, and move it over one more time....to Latin. The foot-notes allowed a copy-maker to explain why he chose this Latin-expression over another possibility. So this ordained topic might be where the translation simply didn’t fit with the original text.

The whole of scripture is consistent on this issue. The whole teaching is not dependent upon one verse.

Look at the qualifications for elders and deacons for example. They are presumed men. No allowance for wimmins in the role.

And as a wimmin I am fine with that.

Ahem...so the first textual scholar to call attention to this theory just happens to be one that wrote a book in 2009 called "An Exegetical and Theological Study of Paul's Letters" with the following Amazon description:

Does Paul teach a hierarchy of authority of man over woman, or does he teach the full equality of man and woman in the church and home? In Man and Woman, One in Christ, Philip Barton Payne answers this question and more, injecting crucial insights into the discussion of Paul’s view of women. Condensing over three decades of research on this topic, Payne’s rigorous exegetical analysis demonstrates the consistency of Paul’s message on this topic and its coherence with the rest of his theology. Payne’s exegetical examination of the Pauline corpus is thorough, exploring the influences on Paul, his practice as a church leader, and his teachings to various Christian communities. Paul’s theology, instruction, and practice consistently affirm the equal standing of men and women, with profound implications for the church today. Man and Woman, One in Christ is required reading for all who desire to understand the meaning of Paul’s statements regarding women and their relevance for Christian relationships and ministry today. This work has the potential of uniting the church on this contentious issue.

… or does he teach the full equality of man and woman in the church and home? …
This “full equality” rhetoric resembles the ideology that wants to ban all religion a bit too closely.
“Women in the USSR are accorded equal rights with men in all spheres of economic, state, cultural, social and political life. The possibility of exercising these rights is ensured to women by granting them an equal right with men to work, payment for work, rest and leisure, social insurance and education, and by state protection of the interests of mother and child, pre-maternity and maternity leave with full pay, and the provision of a wide network of maternity homes, nurseries and kindergartens.”

1936 USSR constitution, Article 122

“Women and men have equal rights in the USSR. Exercise of these rights is ensured by according women equal access with men to education and vocational and professional training, equal opportunities in employment, remuneration, and promotion, and in social and political, and cultural activity, and by special labor and health protection measures for women; by providing conditions enabling mothers to work; by legal protection, and material and moral support for mothers and children, including paid leaves and other benefits for expectant mothers and mothers, and gradual reduction of working time for mothers with small children.”

1977 USSR constitution, Article 35

“Women in the People’s Republic of China enjoy equal rights with men in all spheres of life, in political, economic, cultural, social and family life. The state protects the rights and interests of women, applies the principle of equal pay for equal work to men and women alike and trains and selects cadres from among women.”

1982 PRC constitution, Article 48
It appears to be clear where Dr. Payne is coming from.

There is absolutely no evidence of female ordination in the Christian Church or in the Jewish religion pre-20th century. There were female deacons but they were not ordained.

Another woman wanting to be ordained?
Numbers 12:14 And the LORD said to Moses, If her father had but spit in her face, should she not be ashamed seven days? let her be shut out from the camp seven days, and after that let her be received in again.

...and by state protection of the interests of mother and child... special labor and health protection measures for women...

All three of these summaries of "full equality" guarantee woman-only benefits.

There is truth mixed in with the lies...and we should be careful to retain that truth as we throw out the B.S. that the Left packages with it. Namely that we are all equally made in the image of God, even if we are made with different abilities and potentials. Christianity does not hold women to be less than men, but it does hold them to be different than men, just as it holds that one man is different than another, and we are all of us unique creations of God.

Communism and Leftists want people to be "equal" in the sense that each person is a brick in their wall...or in their tower to the heavens....but of course the social engineers are more equal than the rest. Thus the systems devolve to strong men enforcing conformity on the masses where every pony has a big equal sign as their cutie mark , except the lead pony in the village that still has her cutie mark, but hidden under paint.

Christ had no problem standing up to the religious powers that be, but Christ selected only men to be His apostles. He could have picked equal numbers of men and women to lead His Church, but He did not. Why?

Scripture is inerrant. It is absolutely immaterial whether Paul wrote this letter or that letter, or this passage or that passage.

If a letter were discoveted that was unquestionably written by Paul, it would not become part of “Scripture.”

Because texts become Scripture BECAUSE OF TRADITION. Without Catholic Tradition and Catholic liturgy, Scripture is impossible.

What a ridiculous statement. The man you call Master lived the Torah, and taught Torah to the people. He spent his time preaching the Torah message of the Kingdom, and never set foot in a church; there were none. The Catholic Church cannot abscond with the entire Bible and then claim that it has the ownership thereof. That’s so dishonest and it’s just silly.

Go ahead, find me a major denomination or geographical area that had women ordained as regular practice, anywhere in Christendom, until the mid-20th Century.

The ordaining of women was "added later".

It really wouldn’t have been necessary at the time it was written. Of course, this academic is undoubtedly lying through his teeth.
