Florida Gov. Rick Scott issued a stern warning about Hurricane Irma on Wednesday, saying the Category 5 monster could be even more dangerous than Hurricane Andrew a quarter-century ago.
Scott, who has declared a statewide emergency, urged residents to heed mandatory evacuation orders that were declared locally throughout the Sunshine State.
I cannot stress this enough: Do not ignore evacuation orders, Scott said during a morning news conference. We can rebuild your home, but we cannot rebuild your life. Take what you need, but only what you need.
Monroe County which encompasses the Keys issued mandatory evacuations for visitors that began Wednesday morning. The order will be issued in the evening for residents as well, the governors office said.
People with special needs will be evacuated from Miami on Wednesday, and Miami-Dade officials are advising residents in low-lying areas to also move out, officials said.
Storm models show multiple potential paths for the hurricane, but Scott warned residents not to wait for Irma, which could hit the east or west coast of Florida by early Sunday and unleash a deadly storm surge.
The hurricane is likely to hit the Florida Keys, according to meteorologists, but Scott said it also could target Fort Myers, Naples and Miami.

A looters paradise.
My nephew’s family in Central FL is debating bugging out and heading to our place (KY) for the duration. He’s thinking he will decide tonight after dinner. It’s difficult to decide what to do, we were in the same boat in 2005 when we lived in Florida. We bugged out for one of the four hurricanes that fall. What a nightmare. So we stayed for the next one - Florida sucks when it is warm and humid and you have no power for 5 days.
Had just enough damage (without leaks) to get insurance to replace the roof - after the hurricane deductible of course. That was enough for us. 5 months later we put the house up for sale and left. Never moving back there.
People are getting PLENTY of warning.
The crazy old buzzard that thinks he can ride it out in his shack, can get bent. Dont risk anyone’s life to “save” these people.
When is the left going to mention the word “karma” and the fact that Trump won Florida’s 29 electoral votes?
I agree with you about not risking anyone's life to save the old buzzard, but it's his decision, not some politician's; "mandatory" evacuations are bulls***.
Another misleading headline. The MSM is starting to sound like tabloid trash.
We just got an email from the president of our condo association in Fort Lauderdale. We’re on a canal right off the Intracoastal and he’s told everyone they must evacuate. Anyone refusing to do so is on their own. We’re in MA. right now getting ready to head to So. CA. We’’re going to FL. In 2 weeks and it will be interesting to see what greets us.
Maybe it would come as a surprise to some but Florida is largely a peninsula surrounded on three sides by large bodies of water so “getting out” is reduced to an all-night drive up to Georgia or getting on an airplane.
They sound like the woman who looks at the male during a crisis moment and yells “do something!” Well, that’s great advice but it means little without more specifics.
Gov Scott is out of his mind if he thinks the whole state of Florida can evacuate. I am staying put in our 3rd floor condo. No chance of drowning on 3rd floor. And I am well stocked on water, coffee, donuts & cheesecake.
Irma go nutz on you....
We gonna evacuate Florida? Do Alabama and Georgia know about this?
Well, like Houston, they only need to evacuate the low-lying areas!
/s
I think he's talking about people in the evacuation zones (along the shore) and people in substandard housing (mobile homes, etc.). He's not saying for the whole state to evacuate... that would be nuts.
I will evacuate to the Flat Mountains of Central Florida.
If the wind doesn’t get you.
We got a sturdy house, but we might leave and visit relatives in Connecticut...
My sisters, outside Tampa, are not leaving.
Have a look at twitter, it’s full of scumbags saying just that.
So, that would also mean that Fidel's brother is in the same karma boat. Would it not?
