Mother Nature certainly isn't helping the dramatic downturn at the August box office, where revenue for the weekend could hit its lowest level in more than 15 years, in addition to being down nearly 50 percent from the same frame last year.
Hurricane Harvey has prompted theater closures in Corpus Christi and other locales along the Texas Gulf Coast. Inland, numerous cinemas have also shuttered in Houston.
Even without the storm, none of the weekend's new offerings were expected to earn more than $5 million, and that's proving to be the case.
Animated family film Leap!, from Harvey Weinstein's shop, is projected to do the best, earning an estimated $1.6 million Friday for a projected $4.8 million-$5 million debut from 2,575 theaters for a third-place finish behind holdovers The Hitman's Bodyguard ($9 million) and Annabelle: Creation ($7.5 million), respectively. Hitman's Bodyguard will join only a short list of films to ever win a weekend with less than $10 million, at least in modern times.

Blaming a hurricane for crappy box office receipts. I’ve seen it all now. LOL. They were crappy a long time before anyone knew about “Harvey”.
Wondering how long before some jackass comes on this thread and says, “I don’t see anything from Hollyweird”.
Seafoam Blue.
Buy a quart of it and put some on a wall.
Watch it dry.
More entertaining than recent movies.
If the studios are in such bad shape that a few theaters in southern Texas and Louisiana are the make-or-break element of their profit, then the story is bigger than those few theaters. There are 48 other states that aren’t experiencing a hurricane right now, and most of them are more urbanized than the relatively-sparse Texas coast i.e. with more movie-goers. Not to mention north Texas which isn’t feeling any of the storm. Dallas today is mid-70s and showery (no wind), which is perfect movie weather. No one heads to Padre Island to watch movies indoors.
It would be good if you knew what you were talking about before you take fingers to keyboard. According to Box Office Mojo the U.S. film industry took in $11.3 Billion last year. It has shown an increase in seven of the last 10 years including 2015 and 2016.
;^)
Okay. I thought we were talking about THIS year. Sorry I “offended” you.
Re #1:
She is so friggin’ cute!
Thats 1.1 BILLION dollars my friend. In any industry, if you experience a 10% drop in sales, that should tell you somethings not right.
Hollwood, Cable, the NFL and ESPN have pissed off their customer base.Pay attention NASCAR and Camping World.
Laughing through my tears ...
I actually saw that one on television years ago. Dreadful.
Terminator 2 3D also bombed as predicted! You here that, The Arnold Fans? Schwarzenegger and Cameron need to learn to shut their yaps about Trump and women.
Until recently, I had not been to a movie in 5 yrs.
That stretch was broken when my sister and her kids dragged me to the new Spiderman movie.
They all loved it, but I thought it was stupid as hell.
Oh, and Michael Keaton is looking damn old.
And, until the credits, I did not realize Marisa Tomei was in it.
I turned to my sister and said.... I didn’t see her.
Well, she was Spiderman’s mother. I didn’t even recognize her(and I’ve seen My Cousin Vinny a zillion times).
At the end of the movie, she had the best line(after catching her son changing into Spiderman). Yet, I still didn’t realize it was her.
Perhaps if Hollywood still had some movies with excellent scripts that didn’t tell us how to lead our lives people would actually go see them.
People here seem to think that Hollywood's current misfortunes are due to a lack of conservative films. Truth is, Hollywood is getting their clock cleaned by streaming television.
It isn't that movies are too liberal, or not conservative enough, or too preachy. The problem is that they are not entertaining! People are staying home and watching Game of Thrones instead (which, as the number one TV show right now, is a fairly convincing argument that American viewers are not repulsed by sex, nudity or violence).
Domestic ticket sales are down by 70 million admissions so far from 2016 to 2017. Would be interested to know what percentage of that is due to people boycotting, or if it’s mostly crappy movies, or people preferring to watch films at home.
This year, it sure seems like Hollywood is hitting a similar wall...for similar reasons. Time will tell - but these days its very difficult to find a movie that doesn't feature a loudmouth leftist activist in a starring role...so the prognosis is not good.
