Love for Children
August 14, 2017
Let the children come to me. Dont stop them! For the Kingdom of Heaven belongs to those who are like these children.
Matthew 19:14 nlt
Thomas Barnado entered the London Hospital medical school in 1865, dreaming of life as a medical missionary in China. Barnado soon discovered a desperate need in his own front yardthe many homeless children living and dying on the streets of London. Barnado determined to do something about this horrendous situation. Developing homes for destitute children in Londons east end, Barnado rescued some 60,000 boys and girls from poverty and possible early death. Theologian and pastor John Stott said, Today we might call him the patron saint of street kids.
Jesus said, Let the children come to me. Dont stop them! For the Kingdom of Heaven belongs to those who are like these children (Matt. 19:14 nlt). Imagine the surprise the crowdsand Jesuss own disciplesmust have felt at this declaration. In the ancient world, children had little value and were largely relegated to the margins of life. Yet Jesus welcomed, blessed, and valued children.
James, a New Testament writer, challenged Christ-followers saying, Pure and lasting religion in the sight of God our Father means that we must care for orphans . . . in their troubles (James 1:27 nlt). Today, like those first-century orphans, children of every social strata, ethnicity, and family environment are at risk due to neglect, human trafficking, abuse, drugs, and more. How can we honor the Father who loves us by showing His care for these little ones Jesus welcomes?
See the book A Cup of Cold Water in His Name: 60 Ways to Care for the Needy by Lorie Newman at dhp.org/jd007.html.
Be an expression of the love of Jesus.
Speaking into a context where social status was central, Jesus made the revolutionary claim that true greatness is found through being humble like children (Matt. 18:34), who had no status on their own. He further declared that harming a child is a grave sin (vv. 6, 10). His is a kingdom dedicated to uplifting and cherishing the vulnerable (v. 5). Monica Brands

Are You Being Prepared?
August 15, 2017
The Lord who rescued me from the paw of the lion and . . . the bear will rescue me.
1 Samuel 17:37
I worked at a fast-food restaurant for over two years in high school. Some aspects of the job were difficult. Customers verbalized their anger while I apologized for the unwanted slice of cheese on the sandwich I didnt make. Soon after I left, I applied for a computer job at my university. The employers were more interested in my fast-food experience than my computer skills. They wanted to know that I knew how to deal with people. My experience in unpleasant circumstances prepared me for a better job!
Young David persevered through an experience we might well call unpleasant. When Israel was challenged to send someone to fight Goliath, no one was brave enough to step up to the task. No one but David. King Saul was reluctant to send him to fight, but David explained that as a shepherd he had fought and killed a lion and a bear for the sake of the sheep (1 Sam. 17:3436). Confidently he stated, The Lord who rescued me from the paw of the lion and . . . the bear will rescue me from the hand of this Philistine (v. 37).
Being a shepherd didnt earn David much respect, but it prepared him to fight Goliath and eventually become Israels greatest king. We may be in difficult circumstances, but through them God might be preparing us for something greater!
Lord, help me to hold on during the unpleasant times in my life knowing that You may be preparing me for something greater.
God uses present circumstances to prepare us for the future.
When you reflect on experiences in your life, can you identify any that God used to minister to others or to further His kingdom? Are you in a difficult situation right now? Ask God to help you learn from it and to trust Him for your future. J.R. Hudberg

Not Fear but Faith
August 16, 2017
The Lord is with us. Do not be afraid of them.
Numbers 14:9
My husband was offered a promotion in another country, but I feared leaving our home, so he reluctantly declined the offer, my friend shared with me. She explained how apprehension over such a big change kept her from embracing a new adventure, and that she sometimes wondered what they missed in not moving.
The Israelites let their anxieties paralyze them when they were called to inhabit a rich and fertile land that flowed with milk and honey (Ex. 33:3). When they heard the reports of the powerful people in large cities (Num. 13:28), they started to fear. The majority of the Israelites rejected the call to enter the land.
But Joshua and Caleb urged them to trust in the Lord, saying, Do not be afraid of the people in the land for the Lord is with us (14:9). Although the people there appeared large, they could trust the Lord to be with them.
My friend wasnt commanded to move to another country like the Israelites were, yet she regretted letting fear close off the opportunity. What about youdo you face a fearful situation? If so, know that the Lord is with you and will guide you. With His never-failing love, we can move forward in faith.
Loving Father, may I not let my fear stop me from following You, for I know that You will always love me and will never leave me.
Fear can paralyze but faith propels us to follow God.

~A Happy Very Warm Fuzzy Wednesday~
To Amy's Place
~Sitting On A Beach~
Sandy moments on a white ribbon stretching to the horizon
Lapped by salty waters wandering the world dawn to dawn
I walked the strand twixt the sounding sea and the land
Thinking no thoughts at all, just dreaming out of hand
~
Zephyr wind song set to dancing gulls crying their glee
Racing the shifting tides and chasing waves by me
Circling overhead in a ballet between dawn and dusk
as I pause and smell the seas own brand of musk
~
Sun drenched shore and glittering sea blending sweet
Sea grasses dance in the shifting airs so soft and fleet
I love this place where the heart and soul can heal
And where the human song can finally freely peal

Promise of a Peaceful Home
August 17, 2017
Everyone will sit under their own vine and under their own fig tree, and no one will make them afraid.
Micah 4:4
Sixty-five million. Thats the number of refugees in our world todaypeople who have had to leave their homes due to conflict and persecutionand its higher than its ever been. The UN has petitioned leaders to work together in receiving refugees so that every child will get an education, every adult will find meaningful work, and every family will have a home.
The dream of making homes for refugees in crisis reminds me of a promise God made to the nation of Judah when ruthless Assyrian armies threatened their homes. The Lord commissioned the prophet Micah to warn the people that they would lose their temple and their beloved city of Jerusalem. But God also promised a beautiful future beyond the loss.
A day will come, said Micah, when God will call the peoples of the world to Himself. Violence will end. Weapons of war will become farming tools, and every person who answers Gods call will find a peaceful home and a productive life in His kingdom (4:34).
For many in the world today, and maybe for you, a safe home remains more a dream than a reality. But we can rely on Gods ancient promise of a home for people of all nations, even as we wait and work and pray for those peaceful homes to become a reality.
God, thank You for the beautiful promise of a home. Please bring peace to our world, and provide for the needs of all of Your children.
God promises His children a peaceful home in His kingdom.
Micah (whose name means Who is like Jehovah?) was a prophet for the Southern Kingdom of Judah. His ministry overlapped with that of the prophet Isaiah. Micah calls His people to reflect Gods heart when he says: Act justly . . . love mercy and . . . walk humbly with Him (6:8). Micah tells us that Gods heart delights to show mercy (7:18). And Micah prophesied, But you, Bethlehem Ephrathah, . . . out of you will come for me one who will be ruler over Israel, whose origins are from of old, from ancient times (5:2).
This promise was realized in the person of Jesus. The timeless God has sent His Son to our rescueand Micah helped prepare people for His arrival. Bill Crowder
