Would you stay in a hotel w/a stranger? Marriott set to introduce communal rooms for up to 16
The London Daily Mail ^ | February 6, 2017 | James Gordon

If you believe that 'strangers are simply friends you haven't met yet', you could be making a lot more if you stay at some Marriott hotels in the near future.

The largest hotel chain in the world is planning to make communal rooms in some of its hotels that will be shared by between six and 16 guests.

The idea, which is still in the design stage, would be rolled out in 23 Element hotels which is the chain's eco-conscious, extended stay brand....

I’ve slept in such places. Typically they had an engine pulling it along tracks and a customs agent waking you up in the middle of the night to look at your passport. When you woke up people expected a different currency and spoke a different language.

Although I have slept in a room with 14 giggling girls and three other chaperons.

What were they giggling about?

LOL! That was the first thing I thought of. In the 19th century (and before) in the US (and everywhere), inns were often kind of free-for-alls where you got assigned a space with who knows what or whom. Modern day hostels are similar, along with things like albergues on the Camino De Santiago..

However, those are either religious, hiking or student experiences now, and while they can be fun, its hard to believe that they’d be a business model for Marriott.

The great Merle Haggard said it best: “From now on all of my friends are gonna’ be strangers.”

Oy, who knows?

Probably about some boy. Or a new hair ribbon. They giggled from morning to night.

Nice girls but after six days I was happy to hand them back to their parents.

Few years back Continental Airlines cancelled flights due to lightning and paired tWO travellers in a hotel room. One guy raped the other guy. Bad idea.

Moby Dick?

Yes. I had to find a part of the bed scene without Ishmael's or Queequeg's names.

I had forgotten this part very early in the book:

And, doubtless, my going on this whaling voyage, formed part of the grand programme of Providence that was drawn up a long time ago. It came in as a sort of brief interlude and solo between more extensive performances. I take it that this part of the bill must have run something like this:

"GRAND CONTESTED ELECTION FOR THE PRESIDENCY OF THE UNITED STATES.

"WHALING VOYAGE BY ONE ISHMAEL.

"BLOODY BATTLE IN AFFGHANISTAN."

Though I cannot tell why it was exactly that those stage managers, the Fates, put me down for this shabby part of a whaling voyage, when others were set down for magnificent parts in high tragedies, and short and easy parts in genteel comedies, and jolly parts in farces

"BLOODY BATTLE IN AFFGHANISTAN."? I remember from the first Sherlock Holmes book that Watson had just returned from being injured in Afghanistan. Is there any generation that avoids that pit?

In today’s society, these will end up as gay bathhouses disguised as hotels.

I spent 4 years on a ship where my private safe space was a 3x6 bunk with a sturdy curtain for privacy in a room with about 100 other guys. That was fun.

Exactly. I’ve spend dozens of nights in Europe in places like this. I’d do it again.

This will allow them to significantly raise the rates for a “private” room. Just like cable raises the price for “high-speed” internet.

I read that last fall. Great novel. Loved the phrase, “son of a bachelor.”
