Usually the only coaches that get rehired after being fired are ones that have gotten their previous teams into the playoffs.

Andy Reid being a prime example. Andy lead the Eagles to the playoffs and Super Bowl. That is why he was sought out and signed by Kansas City so quickly.

Rex, however, isn't likely to be a head coach again.

I watched the first Bucs game, but none since. Although, I attended the Bucs & Bears game in Tampa. My only two digressions. Mea culpa!

Good chance Anthony Lynn is named fulltime HC after the season.

Why?

It’s a timing thing to let the potential candidates know there is an opening to be had. Also if they want to give a lower level coach a tryout they can do the interim thing for a bit to see how they handle it. Just saying there are viable reasons for it to be done prior to the end of the season.

Old coaches are fired and new ones hired because the team stakeholders think it’ll improve their chances at winning games, winning championships, etc. In the case of the NFL though it looks pretty hopeless this next decade for all the rest of the teams besides the Dallas Cowboys since they are obviously the only team deserving to win a Super Bowl for the next decade or so. Now I do make this claim as a Dallas Cowboys fan, though I probably am more objective about the Cowboys than the MSM is about political leaders ;)

Lots there to look at.

From not calling the time out to ice Franks at the end of regulation, to a mediocre record, it was time for a change.

Watch Lovey Smith coach the Bills.

Go Phins!

I never understand why in sports, we see musical chairs of head coaches, baseball managers etc.

Because you can't fire the team.

On January 14, 2015, Del Rio was hired to become the new head coach of the Oakland Raiders, who are in the playoffs for the first time in decades.................. It ain’t the coach,, it’s the talent on the field..........

All I know is, his son sucks as a quarterback.

The talent is not necessarily genetic..............

Dallas Cowboys ... the only team deserving to win a Super Bowl for the next decade or so.
Ah, don't count your chickens just yet.

Let’s not forget Marvin Lewis with the Bengals. We all know why they haven’t fired him.

As a Patriot’s fan, I couldn’t agree more. He has talent defensively, no doubt about it. He just isn’t a good head coach.

I have always found him humorous and kind of entertaining to watch from afar, but...he is such such a loose cannon in his own organization that I don’t think he can consistently succeed.

If I put on a GM hat, I would definitely hire him as a Defensive Coordinator, as long as I have a strong head coach to keep him on a leash.

Tony Dungy and Bill Belichick have had a bit of success in the NFL (among others)

Great quarterbacks make great coaches. Only exception I can think of is the Baltimore Ravens with Trent Dilfer.

Lombardi had Bart Starr.
Bill Walsh had Montana and Young.
John Madden had Kenny Stabler.
Paul Brown had Otto Graham.
Belichek has Brady.
Dungy had Peyton Manning.
Jimmy Johnson had Aikman (though Jimmy almost screwed that up).

Shula had Bob Griese and Marino.

And now Jason Garrett has Dak Prescott.

I suspect it is just a matter of chemistry, environment, and an organization looking at a candidate and saying “we can put him in the right environment to succeed”.

The other people just “didn’t do it right”...:)

"Belichek has Brady."

The thing is, when Brady is out either due to injury or his recent suspension, the Pats don't seem to miss a beat.

Defensive coordinators make crappy coaches

You can add UConn's Bob Diaco to your list--former Defenseive coordinator promoted over his head--fired his rear end yesterday.

To make that happen the season ticket-holders threatened to cancel en masse if his scalp wasn't put on the block.

Can’t argue with you on that one. Belichek’s genius seemed to arise after he left Cleveland...that’s one b-a-d franchise.
