Hi Jim, I didn't know how to email you privately so I'll use one of the more casual forums. This is not a new topic, I'm sure, but let me add my voice to whatever clamor there is to migrate Free Republic to a more modern forum software package, one that
1. Has functions which are easy to see/find and invoke
2. Allows easier upload of pictures
3. That allows email notification of replies to comments
4. That allows editing after a comment is posted
5. That has text editing features so one doesn't need to know HTML code in order to add emphasis.
6. That has a Search function for previous posts
7. That is easier to navigate to the specialty forums such as "Gods, Graves, Glyphs", which, had it not been mentioned in a random post, I never would have found here on FR.
This is the modern era, there are far, far better forum software packages out there. Free Republic may well experience a rapid growth in users post Trump victory. We'll want to make joining and participating fully in FR as easy as possible.
Most of what you’re asking for is user-focused, and I agree with others to keep it simplistic - but maybe could add better search BUT...
I absolutely do wish that Jim/John could at least split out the backend to be on some redundant servers in places like Iron Mountain or RackMount or same such.
The thing we ALL love to maintain is NOT giving any user/backend information out to ANYONE else. The minute you do that it changes everything.
I agree. I’m not savvy enough to know what software changes might be useful, but I like FR as it is, and especially DON’T like the idea of advertising and all the problems it can bring.
I’d like an editor feature where you could go back and edit a post and also voting on posts.
Free Republic is one of the few sites around that meets recommendations for accessibility (e.g., uses fonts and character sizes set in the user's browser), portability (e.g., reformats to fit the window) and security (e.g., no @#%*-ing JavaScript).
You probably don’t appreciate just how hard it is to migrate a huge database from one format to another. It is a huge undertaking and can cost millions of dollars.
Yea, but what would the spelling nazis do?
Ditto. FR is nearly perfect. Leave it alone!!
I agree. Reader view and/or text reflow would make reading FR on a mobile device soooo much easier.
You’re right. How selfish of me.
I retract my previous post...
;-)
I do.
I have a major objection to it.
We are not bought and paid for like every other single outlet.
Our only rules are the ones Jim decides to impliment.
And yes I object to the forum being changed.
One of the reason FR is so popular is it doesn't have the frills and goo-gaws that gunk up your computer and can be accessed on even a ten year old system with a slow connection. It is why you can usually get on FR even when everything else is down.
And it is why ex-pats and overseas military use FR.
POST of THE THREAD!
Text reflow is available by default with Opera for mobile, and a reflow add-on is available for Firefox.
Sorry, but it ain’t broke so there’s no need to fix it.
Dear Jim,
Ignore this clown. This site is better because a minimum IQ is needed to post pictures and html.
Yes, the ability to edit after the post would be nice but, otherwise, don’t change a thing.
Just not a lot of pop-ups something that you would actually have to click on.
Even if I wasn’t interested I’d click on them but when I wanted to.
Oh, R'hlyeh?
If you haven't even figured out the "Private Reply" that's at the bottom of every post on FR,
then you pretty much are admitting that you don't know squat about this site.
This is the most readable format there is.
Screw those little pre-fab boxy things.
And ditch the phone.
Get a real computer.
“I ALSO think it would not be objectionalble to accept advertizing - we love capitalism here.
Free Republic does what Facebook does and did it earier. Facebook is worth billons and FR has to go begging each quarter.
This is too important of a site to have these kinds of problems 20 years into its existance.”
==
What you see as problems others see as features.
You want FR’s existence to be dependent on and answerable to advertisers?
You want FR to be more like Facebook? Oy.
If you love capitalism, then you shouldn’t mind tossing some bucks FR’s way.
This is just like the federal government. They kept ‘improving’ the cost of living calculation until there wasn’t any inflation.
Don’t improve FR until it becomes Facebook! YucK
Really??? The advertisers would demand that Jim accept posts from Democrat liberals and muzlim terrorists...
