I have severe shoulder pain, especially when using either A. an overhand throwing motion or, B. reaching behind my back. I've been to an orthopedic doctor. He did x-rays and said that I did have arthritis. He further examined me and said that I didn't have a torn rotator cuff, tendonitis, or bursitis. He gave me a cortisone shot into one of my shoulder joints that hurt like hell, but did help. I then went to a chiropractor and he suggested that I may have a pinched nerve in my neck. I've been going to therapy with him 3 times a week for 3 weeks now, with no relief whatsoever. OTC pain meds don't help in the slightest, and anything stronger causes me to projectile vomit. I've had this pain since June. I didn't have any kind of injury. I'm 40 years old. Please help.
If the pain is radiating from the shoulder blade.....get a tennis ball. Place it between your area of pain and a wall. Move your body back and forth to ball hits pressure points. If that doesn’t work......find a good massage therapist. They usually work for $1 a minute. I get pinched nerves in my upper back frequently. If massage doesn’t work......a steroid shot does the trick. Particularly sensitive during seasonal changes.
I agree with Lydia. If the doctor did not eliminate adhesive capsulitis, it might be worthwhile to try the following:
Stand up straight with arms to your sides, Bend the painful arm at the elbow only, so it is straight in front of you, with your hand oriented so the thumb is “up”. Have someone slowly pull and push on your extended hand while you try to resist. If you have pretty much nothing in the tank (yet your other arm is strong when you test it), you might have a.c., and need a new orthopedist.
In my experience, A.C. hurt like the dickens, but was easy to fix with massage, stretching (by a therapist), and exercises. Good luck.
BTW....Myoflex does wonders for me.
Thanks for the link but I think gop4lyf needs it worse than me.
Surgery is irreversible and regressive. Avoid it.
First also try support bandaging. Tricky at first, find the right locations, but ALL early muscle sprains are IMMEDIATELY cured with the correct stretch bandages.
Sprain never goes away permanently.
Sprain does go away for long periods until accidentally extended again.
I have multiple location body strains all cured by correct bandaging. Surrouding muscle tightened, supports sprain and it goes away, ALWAYS.
Includes sprains to wrists, abdomen, ankles, back, neck etc.
Good luck. Pain sucks. :-)
I had a shoulder problem where my humerus was popping out of the joint this was caused by a poorly healed injury 35 years ago when i was a kid.
For anyone with arthritis, I strongly suggest going to a rheumatologist. They are the real experts of arthritis and rheumatism. To explain, there are at least 100 different forms of arthritis, and 200 of rheumatism. You *need* an expert.
Not only is diagnosing which kind you have, which can be very complicated, they have a huge litany of OTC and pharmaceutical drugs they can experiment with to find the ones that are best for you. Different people get different results from different drugs and supplements, and some of them need blood monitoring to insure they are not causing harm.
But generally you can get relief, both from pain and damage from both, if you act soon and are willing to experiment.
Lots of comments here about seeing a good chiro, and lots about avoiding chiro. I’ve seen good ones and not so good ones. The one I have now is excellent, and he is conservative about wanting me to come all the time. But having an MRI rather than just an x-ray is good advice, and a chiropractor can’t provide that as far as I know.
I have had shoulder pain and most of mine has caused by muscle spasms. Have you visited a massage therapist?
I have had all kinds of episodes over the years of sever pain in my shoulders, neck area, and between the shoulder blades. Sometimes it lasted for days and even weeks.
What worked for me and was an instant solution was an inversion table and also a simple foam roller. Learn how to use both and it may be your ticket to pain relief once and for all.
Working just as well as the more expensive Blue-Emu is Blue Goo. I buy it online for a very reasonable price for joint pain and swelling - wrists, knees and hips.
Try to start cooking with turmeric. It may slow down the first onset. You can also use it as a face mask
Yes, everyone has an opinion. And the views of FR are to be taken seriously.
Try a new chair without arms. Seriously.
If a new chair doesn’t fit it, then get an xray and look for a fracture. If fracture, then advil and rest for two months. If no fracture, then arthritis, ice, and decrease sugar for the rest of your life. We all have a health cross.
See a neurologist. Nerve impingement or herniated disc at C5 and C6 will cause shoulder pain.
Thoracic Outlet Syndrome - for those unfamiliar - is when nerve bundles going to the arm...or veins returning from the arm - both through the narrow space between the collar bone (clavical) and 1st rim get pinched....causing problems.
If the nerves are pinched - it can cause pain in the arm or shoulder area, depending on the extent of pinching. (And - this apparently is not uncommon among swimmers...)
Venous blockage is more rare...supposedly only 2 in 50,000 have that problem....and my son was one of the ‘lucky’ 2 of 50,000....he woke up one morning after a good workout in the gym the previous night...and his arm was quite swollen. There was a 12 inch clot in the return vein....and he had an interesting path of recovery. For him - they had to remove about 3/4ths of the 1st rib ...cut from the sternum and most of the way around/behind.
Until now. Check my home page for the whole story.
We’ve had a great chiropractor for many years; but I don’t
let her jerk & crack my neck. She is very gentle with me
and respects my choice NOT to have my neck popped!
Not all of them are like her. She studied her lessons in
school seriously.
Bottom line is that most of us are NOT doctors. Find
yourself a good doctor!
been there done that i get relief from cortisone into the joint not the muscle
dr says once every 6 months i can go 10-11 months
be careful cortisone can lower your immunity for a few days
anything anti inflamatory helps maybe cutting down on sugar look for natural anti inflammatory cures
try not sleeping on it
alternate ice heat hot shower helps me in the morning
mine is agravated overhead movements or over my shoulder doc asked me if i was a carpenter all mine life using a hammer -lol no
good luck I know what its like!
Don’t let them go for too long. My rotator cuff was so torn I had to lift my right arm up with my left hand to use it. Get thee to a doctor!!
