Are pomegranates really the superfood we've been led to believe will counteract the aging process? Up to now, scientific proof has been fairly weak. And some controversial marketing tactics have led to skepticism as well. A team of scientists from EPFL and the company Amazentis wanted to explore the issue by taking a closer look at the secrets of this plump pink fruit. They discovered that a molecule in pomegranates, transformed by microbes in the gut, enables muscle cells to protect themselves against one of the major causes of aging. In nematodes and rodents, the effect is nothing short of amazing. Human clinical trials are currently underway, but these initial findings have already been published in the journal Nature Medicine.

As it appears to require a gut microbe, consider taking a multi-strain probiotic. They don't know which family of probiotic does the conversion, but some people don't have it.
Pomegranate seeds make a tasty topping for a salad.
Eewww, poop transplants....
I love them and the juice. I try to keep Pom juice in my fridge. I was born in MS and a friend of my dad’s had a few trees.
Growing up in Arizona, almost every house had both pomegranate and fig trees. I still like both today. Pomegranate juice is good if not overly sweetened.

No, “poop transplants” are completely different than probiotics.
My husband loves pomegranates.
Hmmmm. Maybe that’s why, when I accompanied him to his heart dr checkup, the nurse looked at me and said to my husband “I see you brought your mother.”
I walked out.
How does it mix with Jack?
Another one of my grandmother’s common sense foods. She always ate pomegranates, honey, vinegar, garlic and onions....and a small shot of brandy with her morning tea:) She lived to be 98.
I can finally be glad that I’m a nematode!
I ordered some capsules from Lucky Vitamin that I’ve bought stuff from before. A couple of good reviews (assuming they are honest) and they weren’t expensive.
I get acid reflux easy and capsules are better for me as a rule but maybe I’ll try the juice.
I’ve got my physical tomorrow and no doubt quack-ette will complain about the usual things. I will complain about my usual things too.
Look at the Minoan civilization, the pre-greek civilization in Crete.
They were totally obsessed with Pomegranates. They demanded and received giant vases full of pomegranates from places they conquered. It seemed so weird to me
How do you know a pomegranate is ‘good’ before you buy it?
Every one I’ve gotten has had seeds that were like chewing apple seeds.
I do like the Pom juice, but it seems to be sweetened quite a lot...

I do like POM drink, but it’s so frickin expensive and never on sale.
My nephew’s wife is 30 and when they were eating out, a waitress said the same about her. “What would your son like to drink.” She is young and cute so shrugged it off and laughed. My nephew looks like he hasn’t gone through puberty yet. He is about 5 ft 5 and can’t grow any facial hair and might weigh 110 lbs.
My husband gets the same about me. I get mistaken for his daughter and the first time it happened, he said that the waiter was just being polite. So we have a deal that I get $100 every time it happens because he was sooooo sure it wouldn’t happen again. I have bagged $500 so far.
Lot better way to fix your gut than play with poop.
Make yourself a batch of old fashioned sourkraut using organic cabbage and sea salt. When starting fermentation, cover jar with flour sack cloth for 12 hours, then put on the normal fermentation lock. Eat in 4 weeks with sour cream mixed in as a dip for chips. I will be chock full of natural and local pro biotics. It captures them through the cloth filter, and the acidophilus sorts them out for you.
Eat that every couple of says for a few weeks and you will start to loose carb addiction and belly fat.
I guess I might run out to the grocery store for some.
I like the other stuff except the brandy but never mixed them together.
And what is the waitresses cut of that? ;^)
We lived in Scottsdale, Arizona, back in the 1960’s. All our yards had lemon and grapefruit trees. No pomegranate or figs. Lemons were huge - twice the size we buy in the store now and full of juice.
