New York City plans to start enforcing a first-of-its-kind requirement for chain restaurants to use icons to warn patrons of salty foods after getting an appeals court's go-ahead Thursday to start issuing fines. But it's not the final word on whether the regulation will stand.
The novel rule took effect in December, and some eateries already have added the requisite salt-shaker-like icons to menu items that contain more salt than doctors recommend ingesting in an entire day.

And latest articles saying that to cut down on salt will trigger heart attacks ...
Next we’ll (men, obviously) have to sit down to pee. (See South Park episode re-same)
I loathe the Marxist Obama(Soetoro)-DeBlasio(Wilhelm) paradigm. We must destroy them at the polls.....or any other way.
The evidence that eating salt is unhealthful for healthy people is scant, although there may be some benefit for people with certain health conditions. I think that most people understand that just because diabetics can’t eat sugar, or people with allergies cannot eat certain foods, that it does not mean that sugar or those foods are dangerous for everyone. Yet that same nuanced understanding flies out the window where salt is involved.
Regardless of ethnicity, geography, dietary customs, etc., the quantity of salt people consume daily is consistent. This consistency across groups is a strong indicator that the amount of salt that people eat is biologically driven. Any doctor who jumps on the low-salt bandwagon would do well to question whether urging people to ignore their biologically driven signals is actually healthy. Would they encourage a thirsty person not to drink?
Regardless of the science involved, the city of New York has no business dictating how restaurants should prepare their food or trying to control how people eat.
Or drink big gulps.
So in NYC it is ok to pee and defecate on the street but not ok to eat salty food.
Don't go knocking New York values. You know how that gets New Yorkers' pull-ups all in a bundle.
Upside on NYC ban on salty foods: more NYC Libprogs get heart attacks, and die.
(evil grin)
Salt in your blood stream is regulated by the adrenal gland. Sodium is an effect not a cause. If your body calls for more salt, it will get it through some means or another.
I remember when I was in the service 45 years ago, they used to hand out salt tablets so we would retain fluids and not get dehydrated. Salt was used to prevent dehydration for thousands of years. I doubt if our basic physiology has changed in the last 35 or 40 years.
Insanity.
First off, I’m for taking salt shakers off tables. Salt is added to the food you ARE COOKING to enhance flavor...adding salt AFTER you cook is not only unhealthy, but it’s a slap in the face of the cook.
I conceal-carry a salt shaker.
Any time you see some egregious violation of individual liberty in NYC and might be tempted to feel sorry for New Yorkers, remember THEY VOTED OVERWHELMINGLY for the jackasses who are ramming this crap down their throats. They voted 3 to 1 in favor of that moron de blasio. So anything bad that the government does to New Yorkers, isn't half bad enough. They deserve every crappy invasive regulation they get and more.
“First off, Im for taking salt shakers off tables...its a slap in the face of the cook.”
Only when they pry it from my cold, dead hands...and a lot of cooks deserve to be slapped. And beaten. And kicked. Particularly some Michelle Obama-trained pimple-faced brat behind a counter!
If ISIS decides to attack any city in the U.S. first ii needs to be NYC so they will stop bickering over stupid stuff like this.
Some restaurants have gotten so carried away with low sodium that it’s actually needed, since flavor took a back seat to being presumably heart-healthy.
Is there ANYTHING that the NYC government DOESN’T regulate?
North Korea is more free.
In fact, from now on I shall call them NYK.
North Yankee Korea.
Eff the cook. He sucks anyway. I want 25% less than a lethal dose of salt on my food.
There are many places that serve their food bland intentionally though so the salt shakers are still needed.
Mr. Mayor, I didn’t realize that you followed news on FR. Now go back to micromanaging your peons in NYC and leave us alone.
