Microsoft is planning to double the amount of promoted apps in the Start menu with the upcoming Anniversary Update to Windows 10. The software maker revealed at its WinHEC conference last week that the amount will increase from five currently up to 10 in the Anniversary Update that's due to roll out in July. Promoted apps are typically used on new PCs as links to encourage Windows 10 users to download Store apps, and different apps are promoted in different countries.
Some promoted apps are pre-installed, but Microsoft notes that they can be fully uninstalled and any promoted items removed from the Start menu. Microsoft has not revealed exactly why the number of promoted apps is doubling, but it's likely that the company is using it as another method to attract developers to its Windows Store. 300 million devices are now running Windows 10, and Microsoft is planning to issue a free Anniversary Update in July that will include a number of new features and improvements.

Well, I’ll never see them since the first thing I install on newer windows computers is Classic Shell and Classic Start Menu.
I’ll have to figure out how to block Windows from installing these “promoted apps” though...
The Madison avenue clique will drive me away from computers just like they did with the TV. I’m already at the point that I refuse to buy anything I remember being advertised.
Does it not seem odd and quite possibly illegal for a company to have an OS that you paid for that is forcing you to have advertisements blaring at you? Besides being memory hogs, they are intrusive and have no place in an OS.
Does any company actually sell anything any more?? Seems the ONLY thing companies sell are ads.
So far I’ve avoided the upgrade and am still running 7 on my desktop. They keep trying to sneak it in though. One day they will just force Win10 on everyone with an XP or 7 system. One morning all computers will be Win10, many of your apps won’t work any more and Microsoft will be telling you how much better off you are as you struggle to get anything done.
I have a Win10 laptop. I’ve yet to see much that’s an improvement over XP.
It’s not your computer anymore.
I never pay attention to them but, have been meaning to unpin.
I was forced into Windows 10 and detest it. I would never have paid for it.
I tried 10 on an extra hard drive for my desktop PC. Hated it. Too few tweeks available. I like the ‘classic’ theme, instead of all the glitz and glitter crap. They quit including their classic theme after one of the beta test versions.
The windows were too erratic. Tiny width on scroll bars. Tiny window frames, so it difficult to see where one window ended and another began. Not to mention several old utility programs I have that do not have any modern equivalents, that I had to jerry-rig from XP to even get them to run with Win7.
I think my next ‘upgrade’ will be from Win7 to Linux. It seems that Microsoft is trying to kill their business. They would not be the first powerhouse company that eventually bit the dust.
Well, glory be, none of those show up on my Linux start menu.
Thanks to Dalgberg-Acton for the ping!!
You just have no idea how much you're missing!!
Oh, wait... maybe you do. :-)
I never click on that icon in the lower left corner. I have what I need pinned to my task bar.
Indeed. Classic Shell - Start menu and other Windows enhancements
Sheeeeet...... I always set up quick launch and launch programs from there. I use the start menu three times a week.
